Short of farm improvements, August has been a month filled with horse shows! Raising Sand continued to compete in the hunters, gaining confidence and better courses each time. Sadly at 6yo he’s not quite ready or mature enough to “settle down” for the hunter ring, so going forward will be back in the jumper ring (which this owner has no complaints about 😉) Sir Frost continued his upward movement. He officially earned his 1.10m flight wings this past month. He had 3 VERY successful 1.10m rounds with room to spare. We look forward to finishing this year in the Adult highs. The thing about bringing horses along is that it’s beyond a humbling process. Many times things are trial and errors. But growth comes from them. It’s incredibly rewarding to bring them along from when you remember that “first jump” you simply walked over to jumping 1.10m with ease. While your living in the frustration of peaks and valleys of bringing along a horse, it’s when you achieve your next milestone in your goals that remind you each time was worth it. We are where we are because we pushed, we kept trying, and we never gave up. Looking forward as these boys continue to grow and improve!

Farm work never ends! Neither do improvements! Our property had nearly 2 acres of woods that contained invasive trees. We completely cleared it out minus a couple populars and cherry trees, pulled up the roots, tore down the old fencing and installed new fencing. Each post we did ourselves with the help of our auger but let me tell you there was a lot of hand shoveling, tampering and leveling for nearly 60 posts! But the outcome is beautiful! So much better than before!

Owning horses can be easy and tough. Regardless of the fact that most of them have 101+ ways to try to kill themselves and give their owners a heart attack, most of the time they’re pretty easy. The tough part really comes when they get old and their bodies slowly start fading. Sadly we had to put our retired OTTB, Forrest Gump, down. He entered our lives back in 2009, helped achieve many bucket list items for his riders and gave wings when you thought you didn’t have any. He retired early in his career but lived another 10 good years being fat and happy. His last day was a good one. He was made to be pain free as possible and could go out on his terms versus a medical emergency. Rest in peace old man. The kindest thing to do is always the hardest to endure: Run free Forrest ❤️

July proved to be a successful month for our horses! Sir Frost competed in two 1.05m classics earning a 2nd and a 9th out of 20+ riders! He’s officially graduated from the 1.0m/1.05m classes and will compete in his first 1.10m classes in August. Raising Sand had a career change from jumpers to hunters. He is still figuring it out but has earned 2 reserve champions in the 2’6” division and attended his first rated show as a hunter with some good solid rounds. We look forward to August and their successes as they grow in their roles!

Goals and dreams keep individuals going. Earlier this month, the boys of Silver Fox Farm took on Upperville, the oldest most prestigious horse show in the nation. With entries capped, it’s not overly easy to get in. It has been a dream to have a horse worthy to show there one day, and 2024 seems to be the year. The week started off with the Upperville Jump 4 Fun, a local one day show that has cheaper fees but gets locals to be able to show in such a beautiful and historic setting. Raising Sand and Sir Frost had their game faces on and both brought home blue ribbons in their divisions. The Upperville Horse & Colt show was the following week in which Sir Frost was a willing participant. He and rider Sasha Reinhold competed in the large Take2 Throughbred division coming home with a ribbon in each class and even getting to move up. Goals and dreams were both achieved this month and milestones met. Hoping to go back again in the future! Congrats to Sasha and her horses Raising Sand and Sir Frost on their successful Upperville experience!

Keeping this herd fed can be quite the task! We get multiple deliveries each month to keep up with each horse’s nutritional needs. The start of 2024 brought our first hay delivery! Not a whole lot smells better than a barn full of fresh smelling Orchard/Alfalfa mix hay
