As we end #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth, remember that the adversaries are getting really good at Business Email Compromise (BEC). BEC is a form of phishing attack where a criminal attempts to trick a senior executive (or budget holder) into transferring funds or revealing sensitive information. The criminals behind BEC send business-looking emails that might request unusual payments or contain links to 'dodgy' websites. Some emails may contain viruses disguised as harmless attachments, activated when opened. Unlike standard phishing emails that are sent out indiscriminately to millions of people, BEC attacks are crafted to appeal to specific individuals and can be even harder to detect. BEC threatens organizations of all sizes across all sectors, including non-profit organizations and government. Why should it matter to my business? BEC remains a major scourge. Nearly half (49%) of all detected spam emails are attributed to BEC scams, with the CEO, HR, and IT being the most common targets. The problem becomes more sinister when 40% of the BEC emails uncovered were AI-generated, and in some instances, AI likely created the entire message. Financial Impact: BEC scams regularly lead to global losses exceeding $2.5 billion annually and are projected to rise in 2024. That’s enough to make even the most secure CFO double-check their email twice. Make sure that your executive suite, finance team, and HR team are protected against these threats. As we near the end of #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth, we all recognize that our employees can still be an avenue for the bad guys to attack us. It has been proven that training and phishing simulation testing your employees can help. Here’s what we found: • For 2024, the overall phishing success rate average across all industries and size organizations was 34.3%, meaning more than a third of your employees could be at risk of clicking on a phishing email before receiving training, and they are putting your company at risk. • However, only 18.9% of those same users will fall for a phishing email within 90 days of completing a security awareness and training program. • After at least a year on our Aware platform, only 4.6% of those users might fail a phishing test. Companies can improve their susceptibility to phishing attacks by an average of 86% in one year by following our recommended approach to security training and continued phishing simulation testing.
