Recently SST Chicago’s Lewis Liu has been exploring the important societal role opera as an institution occupies for art and advocacy. He was fortunate to have attended Lyric Opera’s scintillating production of Verdi’s Rigoletto and its accompanying panel “Insights: Unraveling misogyny, gender-based violence, and domestic abuse”, an eye-opening critical discussion focused on breaking the silence, raising awareness, putting forth policy changes, and increasing community support for two worthy partnering Chicagoland organizations in the space, Sarah's Inn and A Long Walk Home Inc.. As someone with prior professional experience engaged in domestic and gendered violence issues, Lewis found the ongoing conversation more necessary than ever, and especially relevant and useful given recent high-profile legal developments. He also thoroughly enjoyed Lyric Opera of Chicago's exciting production of Beethoven’s Fidelio, a tribute to the human spirit’s everlasting struggle against injustice and systems of oppression, and its related conversation on “Women and Philanthropy”, connecting the heroine Leonore’s courageous fight for liberty with the ever-increasing place, in contemporary times, that women’s giving and estate planning plays in making distinctive, individualized, agentive impact on the world around us.
