Today is #WorldWaterDay! 🌊 Everything on Mother Earth depends on water, including humans. Water is the natural cooling system for our planet. Without healthy rivers, springs, lakes, wetlands, and oceans, the Earth's temperature cannot be regulated. Current mining projects use water-intensive processes that deplete and pollute our waters, impacting communities, including Indigenous Peoples, biodiversity, and ecosystems and exacerbating the climate crisis. As we celebrate World Water Day, we celebrate Indigenous Water Protectors, who are often criminalized and even murdered for defending our waters against destructive practices. Let's stand together with them in advocating for sustainable water management and protection. ✊🏽 🔗 Check out our article on the intersection of mining, water, biodiversity, and Indigenous Peoples: https://lnkd.in/e2v-CUzx

Reposting from Cultural Survival 🌳 March 21st is the #InternationalDayofForests, and Polina Shulbaeva (Selkup, CS Consultant) reminds us that forests are more than ecosystems—they are home and the foundation of life for millions of #IndigenousPeoples. Large-scale logging and forest destruction for economic gain threaten not only biodiversity but also the existence of these Peoples, their cultures, and their ancestral knowledge. Those defending Indigenous Land Rights face violence, intimidation, forced disappearances, and even murder. 🔗 Read more in Polina’s article: https://lnkd.in/evzXM-_T

Reposting from Cultural Survival for #InternationalDayofForests 🌳 Without trees, humans would not survive. When a forest is at risk of being harmed or destroyed, it severely impacts the livelihoods of the Indigenous Peoples there, along with the entire ecological community. #IndigenousPeoples are often at the forefront in advocating for the protection of biodiversity for the forest and the trees closest to our hearts. 🔗 Read Nati Garcia's article: https://lnkd.in/eT3raT-g #IndigenousRights

Indigenous women are still not on the global agenda at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), an international intergovernmental body dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. 🙋🏾♀️ As we celebrate #WomensHistoryMonth, we must push to advance the inclusion of Indigenous women in decision-making and policy-making related to sustainable natural resource management, especially as Indigenous women have long been defenders of biodiversity and ecosystems and are among the most vulnerable to the climate crisis. As IWGIA - International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs shares in their article, the key contributions of Indigenous women include: 🌍 Biodiversity conservation: Indigenous women are the custodians of seeds and traditional agricultural practices that contribute to the genetic diversity of crops and the conservation of native species. 🌱 Environmental awareness: Indigenous women's knowledge of natural cycles and the relationship between humans and nature fosters conservation and sustainable practices. 🌊 Natural resource management: Indigenous women are at the forefront of the community’s management of resources such as forests, rivers and pastures, promoting their responsible use and preventing their destructive exploitation. 🔗 Read the full article here.

The UN has called for eliminating deforestation in supply chains by 2025, and automakers’ sourcing of leather, rubber and minerals ties them to significant deforestation risks. Will automakers clean up their supply chains to prevent deforestation? 🌍 At the OECD - OCDE's Export Credits Forum in Paris, Yblin Roman Escobar, Policy Advisor at SIRGE Coalition, talks about how energy transition projects are one of the fastest-growing areas of export credit funding. But as more than half of these projects take place on or near Indigenous Peoples' territories, it is crucial to ensure the protection of Indigenous Peoples' rights to avoid the risks of displacement, land grabs, environmental degradation, and other rights violations. 🚨 Without safeguards for Indigenous rights, export credit agencies face economic, legal, and reputational risks. #IndigenousPeoples #IndigenousRights #OECD

Aimee Roberson (Choctaw and Chickasaw), Executive Director of Cultural Survival, emphasizes that automakers have an opportunity to transform the industry by putting people and the environment over profit. Indigenous Peoples' rights, including Free, Prior, and Informed Consent, are central to ensuring sustainable and ethical supply chains. 🚘 Lead The Charge's third annual Auto Supply Chain Leaderboard reveals how automakers ranked in efforts to eliminate emissions, environmental harm, and human rights violations. While improvement has been made, the industry still has a long way to go. ➡️ Check out the leaderboard here: https://lnkd.in/e6t2Hq2T? #IndigenousRights #HumanRights #Sustainability

🚘 Among the survey of 18 global automakers in Lead The Charge's third annual Auto Supply Chain Leaderboard, the average score for Indigenous Peoples’ rights is 6%, two points higher from 2024 and compared to 25% for human rights generally. Indigenous Peoples' rights, including Free, Prior, and Informed Consent, are essential to ensuring truly clean and sustainable supply chains in the automotive industry. While there has been improvement, there is still a long way to go. Kate Finn of Tallgrass Institute said, “Accounting for Indigenous Peoples’ rights and operationalizing FPIC gives requisite data for ground-level impacts. This is a priority for social and impact investors who are requesting disclosures that clearly delineate where companies are exposed to risks related to failure to respect and protect Indigenous Peoples.” ➡️ Check out the leaderboard here: https://lnkd.in/ds-9wBxc? #IndigenousRights #HumanRights #Sustainability

📢 The recent Omnibus proposal marks a major setback for corporate accountability and sustainability. It prioritizes business interests while sidelining Indigenous Peoples, other rightsholders, and affected communities. 📃 The proposal would weaken corporate sustainability policies, including the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and the Taxonomy Regulation, threatening to roll back protections for Indigenous Peoples and the environment. 🗣️ We urge the European Parliament and Council to reject the Omnibus proposal and uphold strong corporate accountability. ➡️ Read more in our statement: https://lnkd.in/eUBf_DZb #IndigenousPeoples #IndigenousRights #ClimateJustice
