In Norway today the value chain for wood in construction is largely linear. Our recycle centers receive about the same amount of discarded wood yearly as new wood used in construction nationally. The discarded wood is manly shredded and used for energy production. SirkTRE works to establish the fully circular value chain for wood in construction by accommodating for and showing good examples of products made form repurposed wood. The value chain includes mapping, planning, deconstruction and logistics, treatment including sorting, fusing, reformatting and new industrial use of repurposed wood. Both solid wood and wood chips will be preserved and repurposed in new constructions also following the growing trend of design for rebuilding.

A few weeks ago, together with Clara Blum and Gonzalo Muñoz Guerrero, we presented our thesis project Reclaim Design: An Availability-Oriented Design Methodology for Reclaimed Lumber in the ITECH Master's program at the University of Stuttgart. The research project aims to augument design possibilities in up-cycling processes by developing a computational and fabrication framework for reclaimed lumber. The main goal is to inform and guide the structural design process from material properties by developing a predictive machine learning model and an equilibrium search design. We had the great opportunity to finalize the project at the Autodesk Research Residency Program at the Autodesk Technology center in Boston, where a medium-scale demonstration of a 7-meter-long truss was built, showing the potential of this research to maximize reclaimed lumber utilization, promote sustainable construction practices, and advance the circular economy in construction with wood. It has been a year full of knowledge sharing and improvement, and I am grateful for the wonderful journey we enjoyed together. In addition, i would like to thank our mentors, Tzu-Ying Chen and Zuardin Akbar, for their unwavering support and guidance throughout the project and our thesis supervisors Prof. Thomas Wortmann and Prof. Jan Knippers, and Prof. Achim Menges for their time and wisdom. Ny episode av CircWOODs podkast ute nå: Ombruk av tre – fremtidens løsning for byggebransjen Kristine Nore fra Omtre i samtale med Kathrine Torday Gulden fra NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research. I tillegg til sin rolle som gründer og teknisk leder (CTO) i OMTRE, leder Kristine SirkTRE som FoU-prosjektet #CircWOOD er en integrert del av. Kristine sitter også i ekspertgruppen for utredning av virkemidler for å fremme sirkulære aktiviteter som regjeringen satt ned i mars 2024. I episoden forteller Kristine om hvordan gjenbruk og resirkulering av trevirke kan bli en bærebjelke i fremtidens byggebransje i Norge. Hun deler også sin reise fra forskning til entreprenørskap, og forteller blant annet om hvordan korona-pandemien ble et vendepunkt for å starte opp OMTRE og ro finansieringen av SirkTRE i havn. – I Norge har vi et enormt potensial når det gjelder gjenbruk av trevirke, sier hun. – Det er så store mengder treavfall der ute, og vi har den beste kvaliteten på trevirket i verden. Vi kan ikke bare brenne det opp – vi må ombruke det på en smartere måte. I samtalen forteller Kristine om hvordan partnerne i SirkTRE og delprosjektene jobber med å etablere en sirkulær verdikjede for returtre, der alt fra skogeiere og treindustri, til entreprenører og forskere, er involvert. Prosjektlederen peker også på den sentrale rollen myndigheter, industri og entreprenører spiller for å øke ombruk av tre. – Hvis disse aktørene satser på ombruk, vil resten av samfunnet følge etter. En viktig oppgave i denne sammenheng er å sikre at kvaliteten på det resirkulerte trevirket er høy nok, og at kostnadene ikke blir for store, sier hun. Harnessing the Power of Waste: A Sustainable Future in Timber Construction I’m excited to share the results of my research project, where we tackled one of the construction industry's biggest challenges: wood waste. Partnering with Urbanjacks and UBC Faculty of Forestry I explored innovative ways to repurpose waste wood into high-performance Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT). 🔍 Key Focus: We collected wood from deconstruction sites and offcuts, transforming what was once destined for landfills into durable structural materials. The goal? To prove that recycled wood can meet the mechanical standards of mass timber production. 🌍 Why it Matters: Wood waste constitutes nearly 20% of landfill material in places like Vancouver, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. By repurposing lumber waste for CLT production, we not only reduce this environmental impact but also sequester carbon for the long term—supporting the push for a more sustainable, circular economy in construction. 🛠️ Results: The tests showed that the CLT produced from recycled wood has competitive strength and durability, comparable to virgin timber. This project demonstrated the incredible potential to integrate sustainable materials into mainstream building practices. A big thank you to Urbanjacks, Matthäus Hermann and everyone involved at UBC for making this project possible! Together, we’re proving that sustainability and innovation can go hand-in-hand.
