    Spring at Winds of Change Farm I've been out on the farm this week. Spring has sprung! Preparing for the upcoming seasons of activities, I've been struck by the parallels between tending to our own health and tending to the health of our fields, grounds and horses. As we embark on this new season, let's remember to prioritize our well-being, both individually and collectively. Just as a healthy farm yields bountiful harvests and galloping horses, so too does a healthy mind and body allow us to fully enjoy the abundance of life.     April is Alcohol Awareness Month   April is dedicated to update our awareness and understanding about alcohol use and misuse to maintain our well-being. Alcoholic drinks have been made and consumed by humans for thousands of years. They've played a role in religion, medicine, antiseptics, analgesics, eating and social events. The function of alcoholic drinks in society has been highly controversial and it is still debated today. The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest that adults of legal drinking age can choose to drink in moderation. This means limiting alcohol intake to: Two drinks or less/day for men and one drink or less/day for women. Walking increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients and opens the doors to enhance creativity. Studies show just getting up from your desk or chair and taking a short walk can really trigger ideas. Creativity is a cognitive skill that is part of problem solving. A Stanford University study found that creative input increased 60% when the participants were walking-even on a treadmill facing the wall. Need to problem-solve?      How can I improve my mental well-being? Research indicates that learning new skills improves mental wellbeing by: 1. increasing self-confidence and self-esteem 2. building a sense of purpose 3. connecting to others 4. building and maintaining cognitive skills-brain plasticity (Forming new brain cells, generating more synaptic connections and increasing brain functionality for complex problem-solving) A few challenging ideas to try: 1. Learn to cook new, healthy recipes 2. Take on a new responsibility at work-mentoring a new employee, etc 3. Learn to fix something using video tutorials online or learn new skills 4. Sign up for a brief course at a local college or adult school 5. Learn a new language, 6. Try new hobbies: painting-artwork, creative writing, chess, gardening, etc. No matter your age, strengthen your brain with new things to create new pathways and neural connections.
