The talk is called, “Art & Mind: The Healing Arts & Accessibility,” which delves into our virtual film & art event, “Art & Mind,” that highlights & compensates creative marginalized women & marginalized genders via short films and performances. ACCESSIBILITY NOTE: Straight Up Care is utilizing a platform different from Zoom and they are working hard to incorporate auto captioning. We’ll be showcasing clips of our 2023 event, “I Know Who I Am! Journeys of Women of Color & Femme-Expressing Creatives,” discuss how we incorporate disability accessibility every step of the way, the importance of virtual events for the disabled community as COVID continues to cause significant issues with our in-person interaction, our mutual aid microgrant project - “The Sistas Uprising Fund,” and why we must continue to create events that intentionally include and uplift disabled people. Currently based in Petersburg, VA, she creates tender sculptural fiber portraits of Black women made of wool, through a process called needle felting. Growing up as a figurative painter, Nastassja always had the desire to work sculpturally, and stumbling across needle felting during undergrad has offered 11 years of material exploration as she continues to challenge how wool can exist within her work. Nastassja was commissioned by the SCAD Museum of Art in the spring of 2023 to perform “Turning Seeds,” a collaborative and site-specific masked performance. She is the recipient of a 2023 Center for Craft: Research Fund Artist Fellowship, a 2022 VMFA Fellowship, the 2021 Dr. Doris Derby Award and currently has two sculptures on display at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore. About: “The Sistas Uprising Fund” is a charity project to help marginalized women & marginalized genders gain financial support through microgrants. Developed by Sista Creatives Rising, co-founded by us, Black disabled mother-daughter duo Claire Jones & Amaranthia Sepia, these microgrants aid these underrepresented creatives who’ve gone through immense hardship. From 6-7pm EST, attendees will be taught how they can create expressive art and writing to reflect on their sensory experiences and emotions. Attendees will listen to music of their choice that matches their mood as they create to create a multi-faceted creative sensory experience. Since I was little, I have utilized music as I create art and writing projects to put my feelings and symptoms on paper, which helped me self advocate as I sought mental healthcare. Attendees will need:  – Songs or an album to play that you feel an emotional connection to so that you can listen to songs that match your current emotions as we create. – Art Materials: colored pencils, markers, scissors, paper/construction paper, glue stick, collage fodder, paints, etc. – Writing materials: pen, paper, journal, etc. – Digital art or writing such as Procreate, Notes, Word, Canva, etc. may be used, but please no AI for this workshop. More workshops coming over the summer & fall! We planned to create a SCR branded workshop in July, but due to our family situation we are at capacity.
