When I joined Smithbucklin, I was eager to learn and grow as a driven young professional who had just finished reading “So Good They Can’t Ignore You” by Cal Newport. I was determined to broaden my skill set and hoped that I might find a deep passion for my work as I continually learned. Six years later, I can say with certainty that I have done just that. Smithbucklin launched its new values on June 4, one of which is “Expertise.” This truly embodies the company’s culture as it creates an environment for its employees to continuously learn and grow. Over the course of my six years here, not only has Smithbucklin provided me with many opportunities to develop as a leader, increase my financial acumen, and work on complex problems across teams—I have also established deep relationships with my healthcare clients to develop, guide and implement the initiatives in their strategic plans. Following the guidance in Newport’s book, as I spent time participating in internal and external trainings, taking advantage of LinkedIn Learning courses, and actively learning from my colleagues, my passion and excitement for my work flourished. I also felt the positive impact I had on my clients and team members. In addition, I have received immense support and mentorship from my supervisors who have invested countless time, patience, and effort to help me grow professionally. I am a big proponent of paying it forward, which is why I have dedicated a lot of my own time to equipping my fellow team members with the confidence and resources to succeed. Last year, I spent time reflecting on the type of leader that I want to become, and the skills and experiences required for me to advance to the place in which I envision myself in five years. To reach the next step in my professional journey, I made the decision to pursue an MBA at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. During my first quarter, I had the opportunity to interview Matt Sanderson, President & CEO of Smithbucklin and an alum of Chicago Booth, as part of an assignment in Professor Emma Levine’s course “Power & Influence in Organizations.” During the interview, Matt shared several valuable insights about his path to leadership and the crucible moments that have defined him in his career. I hope this interview clip prompts you to think about how the crucible moments in your own life can help you define your path. I am excited to continue my MBA journey at Chicago Booth by continuing to learn from my peers and professors and by serving as co-chair of the Chicago Booth Partners Club. Working full-time while completing a rigorous MBA program is challenging but I know that I have the support of my colleagues who are actively cheering me on along the way. #BoothProud #ChicagoBooth #BoothMBA #Smithbucklin #Expertise
