We are proud to congratulate our colleague, Leslie Overstreet— Reed College Class of ‘71—on being featured in "Beyond the Great Lawn"! Leslie’s behind-the-scenes presentation at the Joseph F. Cullman 3rd Library of Natural History on January 11, 2025, offered a fascinating look into pre-1840 book production, from early paper-making processes and binding techniques to intricate illustration technologies. Notable works, such as Catesby’s "Natural History of Carolina" (1771), took center stage in this exploration of rare book craftsmanship. As one of the 10 Special Collection Library branches under the care of Smithsonian Libraries and Archives, the Cullman Library exemplifies our mission to preserve and provide access to rare and historic materials. Leslie has long championed the importance of rare book libraries—not just for their role in safeguarding cultural heritage, but for their active contributions to research and scholarship.
