A team of international researchers, led by Kei Jokura at the University of Exter, has made an astonishing discovery about comb jellies (Ctenophores). These ocean creatures have an unreal capability, they can easily combine with each other to form a completely functional, unified individual. 🔔𝘍𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 Smore Science 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 news and 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 science, and technology https://lnkd.in/gdV5ceVP

On Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, a spectacular annular solar eclipse captivated observers as the Moon obscured the Sun to create a awe-inspiring “Ring of Fire” effect. Skywatchers gathered in the remote Easter Islands to observe the annual solar eclipse from 11:15 a.m. EDT. The brilliant ring light overwhelmed astrophotographers who captured the event for six breathtaking minutes. On this, Josh Drury, an astrophotographer, said that a lifelong ambition is nearly complete. Other photographers also felt overwhelmed after experiencing the eclipse. The eclipse’s path stretched across a wide geographical range, including Cochrane in Chile, Puerto Deseado, Puerto San Julian in Argentina, Hawaii, Southern Chile, North and South America, New Zealand and Antarctica across the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. 🔔𝘍𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 Smore Science 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 news and 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 science, and technology

After 5 years of research, an international team led by Jonay González Hernandez at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) has discovered a new exoplanet, Barnard b, orbiting around Barnard’s star, one of our closest celestial neighbors just six light years away from Earth. Barnard b has many interesting characteristics: ✔️It is one of the lowest mass exoplanets discovered to date. Barnard b has half the mass of Venus. ✔️Orbits 20 times closer to its star than Mercury does to our Sun. ✔️It completes an orbit in just 3.15 Earth days. So, a year on this exoplanet is just over three days! ✔️ Its surface temperature is estimated to be around 125 degrees Celsius, which is hot enough for water to stay as liquid on its surface. ✔️The exoplanet is located well inside the “habitable zone” of its host star. “Even if it took a long time, we were always confident that we could find something,” says Jonay González Hernández 🔔𝘍𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 Smore Science 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 news and 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 science, and technology

These were the exact words of a 25-year-old woman who received a reprogrammed stem cell transplant over a year ago, and she does not require insulin anymore. Instead, the reprogrammed stem cells help her produce her own insulin, https://lnkd.in/dNK46DqK

Sea robins are peculiar bottom-dwelling fish. They have six crablike legs, fins that resemble wings, and the body of a fish. Specifically, the legs are of interest, as they contain taste buds that the fish uses to walk and simultaneously sense the presence of prey. https://lnkd.in/gEuwuvGR

A “potentially hazardous” stadium-sized asteroid passed close to Earth on Tuesday night. The asteroid 2024 ON zipped past Earth at a speed of 19.842 mph and, at its closest, came within 0.62 million miles (1 million km) of Earth, around 2.6 times the average distance between Earth and the moon. https://lnkd.in/gwh_uU9i

It's the early 1980s, and India's skies are teeming with vultures - over 40 million of them. Fast forward just a decade or so, and suddenly, these birds have all but vanished. South Asian vultures were disappearing at an alarming rate, and nobody could figure out why. Read about the real-life ecological mystery of how researchers scrambled to solve the puzzle of India's vanishing vultures and their race against time to save these crucial scavengers from the brink of extinction.
