At SMX we are committed to investing in our people and one of the ways that we do this is through our RISE leadership program. This program identifies a group of rising leaders within the company and provides them with a year of learning about how the company operates, leadership best practices and more. We are excited to spotlight one of our RISE program alumni, Lakulish Patel, SMX Director of Product Development. When asked about the program he shared “For me, the RISE program was all about learning and trying to soak everything in. It was about getting a glimpse into how different business units operate and gaining a broader perspective of the company. It was a great opportunity to see how different teams within the business units measure success and contribute to the larger SMX collective goals. The RISE curriculum is designed to help explore the different facets of leadership, such as decision-making, conflict resolution, and team building. Each of the teams did a fantastic job of taking complicated concepts and simplifying them for us to learn. What really resonated with me was the passion, the wealth of knowledge and experience that everyone brought to the table. One of the key takeaways from this program was the realization that effective leadership is not about exercising control, but about empowering others to reach their full potential. I learned the importance of empathy in leadership, how to effectively communicate my vision, and the significance of adaptability in today's ever-changing work environment. The terms “leadership” and “management” are often used interchangeably. While there is overlap between the two, there are also significant differences. Nitin Nohria when he was still serving as the Dean for Harvard Business school put it very succinctly… he said “I think of management as working with other people to make sure the goals of an organization are articulated and well executed. It’s the process of working with others to ensure the effective execution of a chosen set of goals. Leadership on the other hand is about developing what those goals should be. It’s more about driving change.” To echo his quote, the last year has taught me that leadership is really about igniting action by providing a clear vision, motivation and aligning various individuals to strive towards unified goals. I’m grateful to all the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams, as well as my cohort members who transparently shared their journey of where they started, how they felt sometimes when they came up short, what they worked on improving and how they got to where they are today. The real take away from this is it doesn’t matter how you see yourself as a manager or leader or where you are in your career, both are essential and complementary skills and just like any other skill-it can be learned, practiced and perfected.” Thank you for sharing your experience in this foundational program, Lukulish. We are thankful to have you as a part of SMX!
