Snohomish County Sergeant of Search and Rescue

So, over the summer, my SCSO Dive Team/MSU partner and I helped with PFD (Life jacket) and paddle vessel safety instruction with kids.   We were invited on a couple days to help with Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue with their safety camps.  The kids were awesome and really seemed to absorb the messages we were conveying about water safety.   Unfortunately, the concept seems to diminish or completely dissipate with many adults.  Fire rescue, SAR and Dive/Marine units get inundated with floaters getting stuck in river strainers.  People who fall out of boats or off paddle boards.  Swimmers who seemingly think jumping in a river or alpine lake on a hot day is good idea without testing the 48 degree water first.   All without the thought of even having a PFD at least with them. In some circumstances, a good swimmer can drown.  Just this weekend, we had a sudden wind storm that caused several paddle boarders and people on kayaks to fall in and panic.  There were multiple 911 calls in different areas of Snohomish County at the same time.  Unfortunately, one person drowned in Puget Sound because they did not have a life jacket! Bottom line is WEAR A LIFE JACKET.  At least have one with you as required on paddle vessels.  Water safety is no joke.
