As we near the November 5th election, we would like to share an excerpt of the Opening Plenary from SCG's 2024 Annual Conference, Better Together: Creating A Collective Legacy. Our Opening Plenary, Democracy as Legacy: Strengthening the Integrity of Our Elections, discussed the heightened doubts and anxieties that have emerged regarding our voting systems, and explored how the philanthropic sector can help prepare and strengthen our political infrastructure to maintain our democracy and build public trust. Our panel of speakers included Cathy Cha (Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund), Fernando Guerra (Loyola Marymount University), LaShanda A. Jackson, MBA (Funders' Committee For Civic Participation), Dean Logan (Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk), and Ali Noorani (William and Flora Hewlett Foundation). Listen below to an excerpt of LaShanda A. Jackson, MBA's remarks regarding philanthropy's role in upholding a resilient democracy. Join us on Day One of SGC's Family Philanthropy Conference, Bridging Possibilities, for the highly anticipated Keynote Conversation, "Beyond the Possibilities: A Legacy of Leadership." Over the past twenty years, Carrie Avery and Claire Peeps have inspired our family foundation community as they've led the Durfee Foundation to become one of the most respected philanthropic organizations in Southern California. Rarely do we see a CEO and board chair remain at the helm of a foundation for this amount of time, leading with consistency, intelligence, vision, and care. In October 2024, the extraordinary partnership between Carrie Avery and Claire Peeps ended its lengthy term. Before Carrie and Claire say their final goodbye, they will join the SCG family philanthropy community for an unforgettable fireside chat moderated by Robin Kramer to share decades of wisdom and reflect on their legacies. They will explore how building bridges has been a cornerstone of their decades-long partnerships and the importance of investing in our common humanity. Fundamentals of Effective Grantmaking, SCG's premier training for new foundation staff in #philanthropy, is officially underway! We are stoked to share a sneak peak below of a movement activity from today's program. Over the past two days, our incredible Fundamentals leaders have guided our cohort through essential grantmaking skills, explored leaderships strategies, and facilitated new connections throughout our philanthropic community. Some highlights from this week include: ⭐️ Fred J. Ali (Fred Ali Corporation) started the program with an insightful discussion on the guiding principles behind philanthropic work and what we might envision a shared philanthropic future to look like. ⭐️ Jennifer Vanore (UniHealth Foundation) and Rosemary Veniegas (California Community Foundation) provided an overview of the life cycle from a grant, from the application to the closeout. ⭐️ Jennifer Price-Letscher (The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation) and Joanna Jackson (Weingart Foundation) explored how foundations can build more authentic relationships with nonprofit partners to help advance their collective goals. ⭐️ Adrienne Wittenberg (S. Mark Taper Foundation) guided a workshop on the basics of understanding organizations' financial materials from a programmatic perspective. ⭐️ Rhiannon McAfee (Policy & Advocacy Strategist Consultant) and Emily Michels (SoCal Grantmakers) discussed philanthropy's role in public policy engagement and the importance of cross-sector collaboration. ⭐️ Felicia Jones (Social Good Solutions) and Kaci Y. Patterson, MBA (Social Good Solutions / Black Equity Collective) emphasized the strategies that grantmakers can employ in their roles to center equity in their work. Next week, we are excited for our cohort to experience the Visit With A Grantmaker session and to reconvene for our final day of the program on November 12, 2024! Additionally, we want to thank our Fundamentals staff — Monica Banks, Kameron Green, and Sequoia Thompson — for all your efforts in coordinating SCG’s signature professional learning program and making this experience possible. #SCGFundamentals
