Europe Lead at Social Progress Imperative

Last week, together with Representation of the Bratislava Region to the EU and ICLEI Europe, we hosted a workshop at #EUregionsweek on the topic of ““Beyond GDP: The Social Progress Index as a tool to drive a just transition in EU cities and regions”. The objective of the session was to explore tools available to local and regional policymakers to implement a 'beyond GDP' approach. Presentations by Petra Krylova and Jorge Durán Laguna focused on the global Social Progress Index and the EU Regional SPI respectively, and what insight they can provide to policy decisions regarding the state of social progress in the EU. There was a really interesting discussion on how such alternative measures of progress could be better integrated into EU policy-making, particularly within cohesion policy, to ensure a strong social dimension in the green transition. There was a bit of a disagreement between the speakers on how strong of a role such metrics can have in key decisions, especially the allocation of cohesion funds, alongside traditional economic metrics such as GDP. And if such a paradigm shift would ever be approved by national governments. Juraj Droba, President of the Bratislava Region, made the strongest claim for the Social Progress Index to have a more prominent role, saying: "The Bratislava region has championed the beyond GDP discussion amongst EU regions and has applied the Social Progress Index in its own regional policy strategy.   I believe that it should be used across levels of policy making from the local to the European, especially for the purposes of cohesion policy and in the implementation of the green transition.   We now have an ideal opportunity to influence discussions and reshape the way we measure our progress and allocate European money accordingly, to ensure that our policies reflect the true needs of our people, our regions, cities and also smaller municipalities.” I believe we’ll be having more and more of these discussions over the coming years in EU politics and as the new Commission sets in, and in the follow up of last year’s Beyond Growth conference in the European Parliament. If we are to move to an economic model that looks beyond GDP to measure societal progress, the role of regions and cities, as the levels closest to people’s real lived experience, should be at the centre of the debate. I also just wanted to thank everyone involved in organising this session, especially Tereza Blanová, who did a lot of the prep work behind the scenes, and Jannis Niethammer who did a brilliant job of moderating the discussions. I look forward to continuing working together on these issues! European Committee of the Regions

The best choice for business leaders Is social good. Happy to share a new article in Forbes about why business leaders should prioritize social change - especially today. Making good decisions is never easy but the disruptive today makes being socially responsible especially challenging for businesses. This article builds on important new findings from Bentley University and Gallup (the Bentley- Gallup Business and Society Survey 2024 Report) and CECP (Investing In Society 2024 Edition) that acknowledge the challenges but also advocate for business leadership in social change. “I know that these are challenging times,” said E. LaBrent Chrite, President of Bentley University. “But I’m also a big believer in the power of business and its potential as a powerful force for good.” I couldn’t agree more. I’m also certain that the business leaders who side with social change will come out on top. #leadership #socialchange #impact Impakt Impakt Foundation for Social Change #changeforgood #ESG #CSR #socialresponsibility Daryl Brewster Niluka Kottegoda #DEI

EU Policy Officer at the European Youth Forum

🌍 Tomorrow, the European Parliament will debate the 'Outcome of the #SummitOftheFuture' 🗓️ Read here (https://lnkd.in/dXKBFu55) our reflections on the Summit and why it is important for the upcoming European Commission College of Commissioners and the portfolio for Intergenerational Fairness & Youth that—pending the crucial step of the Parliament hearings—would be in the hands of Glenn Micallef. The European Youth Forum participated in the Summit Action Days to advocate for the creation of a UN Convention on Youth Rights and introduce the YouthProgressIndex.org to world leaders, delegations and activists from across the globe. A big shoutout to the United Nations Youth Office for their phenomenal efforts in bringing together young leaders and youth leaders from every corner of the world. Their commitment to fostering inclusive fora for global dialogue is crucial, especially as we aim to ensure that youth voices will lead to meaningful change. 💡 Two key takeaways from the discussions: 1️⃣ Establishing Regional Dialogues & Funding The Pact for the Future commits to supporting meaningful youth engagement in national policy-making. We still need clear accountability mechanisms to ensure youth rights are protected and youth participation is real and concrete, not just symbolic. Sustainable funding is crucial worldwide—In Europe, programs like Erasmus+ must not only be maintained but expanded. Governments, philanthropic foundations, and international organisations must commit to providing resources that strengthen youth-led, democratic organisations. 2️⃣ Ensuring representation in data Despite the explosion of data in today’s world, we often lack simple yet vital societal metrics that could strengthen civil society. We need context-specific, disaggregated data—by age, sex, gender, and minority experiences—to ensure no voices are left out of decision-making processes. It’s crucial that our data collection is human-centric, ethical, and privacy-conscious to truly empower young people. 🌟 These reflections will shape our ongoing work on the Youth Progress Index for 2025, as we continue tracking youth participation and representation worldwide. The future of youth rights and global progress depends on sustainable action, meaningful youth participation, and accurate youth-relevant data. Tom Matthew Rareș Voicu Social Progress Imperative
