  • From the March 2025 issue of ELTHE - Prompt Engineering and Experiential Learning Design: Using artificial intelligence to help focus on the learning that matters. "Prompt engineering is a method of crafting a set of instructions (or prompt) to input into a generative AI application (such as ChatGPT), to produce better output. These prompts can provide context and direction to a conversation by telling the application what to pay attention to and what the desired output should look like. In this paper, readers will learn what prompt engineering is and why it is relevant to experiential learning design. A simple prompt pattern is used to guide the phrasing of prompts for three examples: designing a debrief script for a simulation, creating reflection questions for a service-learning experience, and using generative AI as a learning partner/tutor. The goal is to ignite the imagination of the readers for how they might design their own prompts to be more efficient and effective in their experiential learning design efforts." • From the March 2025 issue of ELTHE - Unusual Synergy: Undergraduate Research and Civic Engagement Initiatives at Community Colleges "Centers for undergraduate research and civic engagement are rare at the community college level. With two such Centers, both launched in 2022 and 2023 at a Midwestern Community College, we are examining how intentional mentoring efforts in undergraduate research and civic engagement at community colleges impact students’ political efficacy and interest in research careers and careers in public service. We also examine how the students' research and civic engagement projects motivate them to pursue advanced education beyond the sub-baccalaureate level. The Directors of the two Centers, along with community college student participants and co-authors, assess the impact of these Centers and provide recommendations for peer institutions on how experiential learning and high impact practices can be instrumental in implementing and growing such Centers at community colleges. • From the March 2025 issue of ELTHE - Making Experiential Education Visible Through Definition: A simple, three-part definition helps practitioners communicate to other stakeholders. "This article describes the circumstances, process, and decisions which led to Purdue University’s definition of experiential education. The motivation for creating the definition came from a realization that though experiential education was a common practice at the university, it was not visible to nor well understood by university decision-makers. The definition created states that “experiential education is a planned pedagogy centering on an authentic experience to strengthen students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities, paired with student reflection.” This definition was shaped by relevant scholarship documented by academic literature and professional associations and by expertise developed through local practice. It has three key components: 1) planned pedagogy (intentionality), 2) authentic experience, and 3) student reflection. Intentionality emphasizes the planned and designed nature of experiential education, differentiating it from the learning from experience that happens just from moving through the world. Authentic experience allows students to develop and/or apply knowledge, skills, and experiences in the same fashion that they are used in the world at large, such as in an industry, a workplace, or a community. Finally, reflection is the key to extracting lasting learning from experiences. This article explicates the definition in detail and discusses transferability to other contexts."
