Updates

  • Dear colleagues:   In the past few days, we have seen an increase in social media activity concerning the 2024-2026 Board of Directors election. A multitude of posts and subsequent comments were generated on our SFTE LinkedIn and Facebook groups.   These groups are designed for members to interact, share ideas, ask questions, and more. Members who are running for a Board position are also welcome to share their ideas or visions for the Society. Everyone is therefore welcome to engage in a cordial exchange of views.   Although these groups are not an official SFTE media outlet (unlike the pages), their content is monitored for appropriateness and correctness.   We have recently received an unacceptably high number of reports concerning inappropriate comments and language on both Facebook and LinkedIn.    Any comments or posts containing insults, unprofessional verbiage, or sexually-related content are not and will not be tolerated.   We invite members to review the SFTE Code of Ethics and remember that our professionalism is dictated not only by our work but also the way we portray ourselves and interact with others.   We encourage all of our members to foster a cordial and professional environment on any SFTE group.   Your Board of Directors

The second year of the #SFTE SFTE Flight Test Workshop at AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin was a fabulous success! Sixty high schoolers learned about the flight test profession from nine SFTE volunteers over two days. Students were divided into pairs, each given the opportunity to act as a test conductor, pilot and data analyst collecting climb data using X-Box simulators.  The workshops were held at the #EAA EAA Education Center who together with the AIAA Digital Avionics Technical Committee sponsored SFTE’s presence. Kudos to Rachel McFalls-Brown for leading the event and AIAA DATC Committee Chair Art Tank for his efforts to sponsor SFTE. Interested in participating in future SFTE STEM events? Contact SFTE STEM lead Dan Hrehov.

#ITPSCanada is excited to be volunteering at the Society of Flight Test Engineers STEM Outreach event this week in #Oshkosh! 🚀 This is our second year supporting this fantastic initiative that introduces future aerospace pioneers to the thrilling world of flight test. High school students will use X-Plane12 simulators to collect climb performance data at various speeds and altitudes and then plot their findings on a graph. 📈✈️ We're hopeful that this awesome STEM experience will help us team up with the SFTE Canadian Chapter to develop a new flight test STEM program in Canada. 🌟 #flighttest #SFTE #flighttestengineers #SFTECanada #ProudlyCanadian #aerospace #volunteer

Last week I had the good fortune to attend a three-day Critical Incident Response workshop held in Mohave at NTPS. Hosted by SFTE's Antelope Valley chapter, this #CIRP workshop (my first) was tailored for flight testers and expertly taught by veteran airline pilot Louise "Lou" Cullinan. Lou took the 28 attendees through a plethora of incidents large and small where she had been part of the peer support group helping test crew and their families deal with traumatic accidents and experiences. The importance of having flight testers trained to support their peers after traumatic incidents was underscored by the attendance of many organizations including NASA, Scaled Composites, MTSI, FAA, Hermius, NTPS, ITPS, and SFTE. In his talk to the class, NTPS President, Jim “JB” Brown corroborated the value citing the many times he has seen CIRP employed. Kudos to Antelope Valley Chapter President, James Sergeant, who did the yeoman’s work organizing and running the workshop and social events including a tour of the SETP headquarter spaces with its many historical artifacts. The value of CIRP training extends beyond aviation incidents as it can be incredibly helpful dealing with challenges all of us will experience in our personal lives. Contact James Sergeant for more information regarding future CIRP opportunities.
