  • 🎉 SOLES at the 50th Annual SHPE National Convention! 🎉 SOLES had an incredible time at this year's SHPE Convention, where we connected with industry leaders, attended insightful panels and workshops, and explored opportunities at the career fair. We were thrilled to network with companies like The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Wells Fargo, John Deere, Google, and many more. Several of our Solesitos received interviews, and one even landed an internship! 🙌 We also reunited with friends from other chapters and celebrated past SOLES members who attended as recruiters. To top it off, SOLES was awarded the 🏆 SHPE Gold Chapter Award🏆 This is the highest honor given to chapters, recognizing our commitment to SHPE's values: Familia, Service, Education, and Resilience. We’re proud to serve as a model for the SHPE Familia, leading impactful services and programs for our community! Thank you, SHPE, for this unforgettable experience. Here's to many more years of growing together and supporting the next generation of engineers! 🚀 #SHPE2024 #SHPEFamilia #SOLES #EngineeringExcellence #Networking #STEM #CareerGrowth #GoldChapterAward #LatinosInSTEM #CommunityImpact #FamiliaServiceEducationResilience #Internships #50thAnnualSHPE #FutureEngineers

Wahoo Conference for Engineering Diversity!! 🎉 Earlier month, I had the privilege of representing the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) - San Jose State University Chapter at the 10th Annual Conference for Engineering Diversity (CED 2024) at San Jose State University! Alongside incredible organizations like the Society of Women Engineers at SJSU, Black Allegiance of Scientists & Engineers, and Society of Latino Engineers and Scientists, we explored the vital role that diversity organizations play in shaping career paths and preparing students for life after college in addition to discussing how our communities foster stronger connections, enhance skill development, and create a supportive network that empowers individuals to thrive in their fields. 👊

As a proud board member of the Hispanics in Partnership (HiP) Silicon Valley ERG at Applied Materials, I recently had the privilege of attending the MAES Leadership Academy and celebrating its 50th Anniversary. This remarkable event united top-tier college student leaders from MAES chapters at prestigious institutions like CSU Long Beach, Los Angeles Mission College, Purdue, SJSU, Texas A&M, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, University of Houston, UT Austin, UT El Paso, and other MAES professional members. I had the honor of leading a workshop on “Servant Leadership” and serving as a judge for the student project competition. It was truly inspiring to witness attendees develop essential leadership skills through engaging workshops, motivational speakers, and valuable networking opportunities with peers and professionals. A highlight of the event was seeing our local Bay Area MAES student chapter at SJSU - SOLES, receive the prestigious “El Ejemplo – Student Chapter of the Year Award.” This well-deserved recognition reflects their unwavering commitment to servant leadership, member support, and 25 years of impactful MAES Science Extravaganza (SE) K-12 outreach. MAES continues to uphold its mission of servant leadership, inspiring others to achieve greatness and make a positive impact in our community! 🚀 #MakePossibleABetterFuture #GreatCareersHappenHere #HispanicsInPartnership #MAES #SOLES

  • ☀️ Career Development Update with SOLES! ☀️ We had the privilege of hosting two impactful sessions this week to help us sharpen our professional skills! 🚀 First, Lockheed Martin led a Job Hunting BootCamp, guiding us through resume building, networking strategies, and interview prep. Their insights into what makes a candidate stand out in the competitive engineering field were invaluable. Then, the team from The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company shared the Dos and Don’ts of Approaching Industry Professionals at career fairs. Their advice on professional etiquette and how to make meaningful connections was just what we needed with career fair season in full swing! Thank you to Lockheed Martin and Whiting-Turner for investing in our future careers. We’re excited to put these new skills into practice! #CareerDevelopment #SOLES #Networking #MAES #EngineeringCareers #CareerFair #SHPE

Let’s give a big College of Engineering hello to your fellow student, Antonio Hueso-Fernandez, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering. Antonio was born and raised in the town of Pajaro which lies in a corner of Watsonville, California. Watsonville is known in general for its agriculture, more specifically for its strawberries. Antonio’s mother was born and raised in Michoacan, Mexico, and came to the United States after she married his father. Antonio’s mother did not have an opportunity to pursue higher education here in the United States. His father was born and raised in Watsonville and did not initially go the college route but after getting married, he soon realized that higher education would give him the best chance at supporting a new family. Antonio’s father graduated from San José State University (SJSU) with a degree in electrical engineering in 2008. “From an early age, both of my parents instilled the idea of higher education into my siblings and me. They made many sacrifices to give us the best opportunity to pursue a college degree,” said Antonio. His parents were delighted that he chose SJSU because of its proximity and the fact that his father also attended. His father’s co-workers allowed him to shadow them which gave him insights into different types of engineering especially in mechanical engineering. “I enjoyed both the hands-on and computer-aided design aspects of mechanical engineering. Having the ability to see your creative mind go to work designing any object and seeing it physically is something that is truly magical,” he added. This past summer Antonio interned at Nokia as a Mechanical Design Engineer, where he was given a detailed 10-week program from Jimmy Huynh, an employee at the company. This program consisted of various professional presentations and projects that helped the interns enhance their skills and learn some new ones. Antonio learned geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), conducting thermal and static loads with computational fluid dynamics (CFDs), and understanding multiple manufacturing processes in this training program. The opportunity gave Antonio unique insight into the workforce, shaping his professional career. Antonio’s advice for someone trying to land either an internship or a new grad opportunity is to apply to as many as possible and to network with everyone! His internship at Nokia was a direct result of someone who got him in contact with the right person. He also suggests getting involved with student organizations, because that is where you can expand your professional network. After he graduates Antonio plans on joining a company that is a global leader in its space but is open to all industries. He has aspirations of putting in the hard work and eventually becoming a CEO. With this goal in mind, he must first accomplish some milestones which include graduating from a master’s program in mechanical engineering, and then potentially pursuing a PhD program. #sjsu

  • Last week, SHPEtinas had an incredible event with a fun and creative canvas painting social in collaboration with the Society of Women Engineers. It was the perfect blend of relaxation and community building, as we came together to unwind, express our creativity, and strengthen the bonds within our STEM sisterhood! 🎨 In addition to the fun, SOLES also had the privilege of hosting a General Motors info session that provided valuable insight into the automotive industry. During this session, our members gained essential interview tips and resume-building advice straight from the experts, empowering them to put their best foot forward as they enter the job market! Huge thank you to everyone who joined these events! Stay tuned for more opportunities to learn, grow, and connect! #WomenInSTEM #LatinasInSTEM #Collaboration #CareerDevelopment #SHPEtinas #SHPE
