When Eliseo (EJ) Juárez joined Solid Ground’s advocacy partner Statewide Poverty Action Network in 2011, he spent a lot of time “talking to people across the state who seemed to be talked about a lot but never talked directly to”. Since then, EJ’s work has taken him deeper into community, and further up in leadership — most recently with the Department of Natural Resources as their Director of Equity and Environmental Justice. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that local governments are free under the Constitution to fine and jail people who sleep in public places, even if they have nowhere else to go at night. Homelessness is one of those societal problems that is too often left to law enforcement agencies that are ill-equipped to handle it. Our region can choose, and must choose, to do better.
