PAVING THE WAY! In this powerful image, Dr. Terry Piloya, one of only four pediatric endocrinologists in Uganda, stands alongside Hamidah Nabakka, one of the first warriors under her care. Hamidah has lived with type 1 diabetes for nearly 19 years and is a unstoppable advocate, blazing the trail for future voices. As the first dedoc voice in the SNF family, Hamidah has paved the way for other formidable dedoc voices in the SNF family including Ponsiano Egessa, Dankan Onzima, Moses Egesa, Emmanuel Kisembo, Nathan Rubagakene, Lawrence Mtima, Ramadan Masette, and many more yet to come. BORN OUT OF CRISIS. In 2020, as COVID lockdowns loomed, Nathan Rubangakene was sensing trouble as warriors in his program (Project Mishra) were struggling to access their clinics in remote and rural Uganda. Recognizing that some of the parents/guardians of warriors under his care were motorcycle taxi (boda boda) drivers, like Edmond pictured here, before the crisis with his father, Nathan started organizing these parents/guardians and they became a lifeline in Northern Uganda, delivering life saving insulin to warriors who could not reach clinics when the crisis reached fever pitch. Nathan’s quick thinking inspired us to match his speed in getting Project Boda-boda launched! What began as a response to a lockdown has now become a pivotal intervention addressing access to care. FROM ZERO TO A HUNDRED! Moses Egesa is not just the Warrior Coordinator for Jinja clinic in eastern Uganda, he is also the Assistant Project Coordinator for Project Boda Boda, leading 35 clinics across the country. Starting with zero warriors at his clinic, Moses, under the guidance of his dedicated clinician Ms. Allen Nabisere, has grown the clinic to serve 120 warriors through relentless outreach, home visits and meeting every metric and target set for the clinic. FROM GULU TO GLOBAL. Patrick “Peck” Okema’s life is nothing short of inspiring. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a teenager, Peck grew through ranks as a warrior, then a camp counselor, and then as a diabetes nurse all because of his own diagnosis. This week he is one of only 15 healthcare professionals selected by ISPAD’s prestigious Science School in Lisbon, Portugal, the only African, the only warrior, where he is joining an elite team researching solutions for insulin storage in low resource settings and bringing those solutions back to his clinic in Gulu, Northern Uganda. THE LAST MILE. In our world, warriors of the "last mile" come from the most remote, rural, underserved regions where managing type 1 diabetes poses unique and immense challenges. The term "last mile" coined by our very own Project Lead Ivan Okoth highlights these untold stories of resilience and perseverence.
