In the fast-paced environment of a hospital emergency department (ED), every second counts. As an ED physician, Dr. Tony Briningstool, Sound’s CEO for Emergency Medicine, has seen how quickly sepsis can turn a routine case into a life-or-death situation. Sepsis is hard to identify, often presenting as a simple infection when, in reality, the body is waging an all-out internal battle. The ED plays a critical role in identifying and treating sepsis. Early recognition and swift intervention are key yet challenging during a busy shift. It's the responsibility of emergency medicine clinicians to understand the nuances of sepsis and use evidence-based strategies to manage this high-risk condition effectively. We’re excited to celebrate Dr. Derrick Alger's recent recognition with the Mercy Touch Pin It Forward Award! Dr. Alger, a hospitalist with Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received this prestigious award for exemplifying integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence in healthcare. A family friend of a patient called to express her appreciation for Dr. Alger. She was grateful for his compassion and the extra care he provided, even checking on the family during his off hours.
