In this episode of Critical Matters, Dr. Sergio Zanotti discusses the use of intravenous albumin in critical care. He is joined by Dr. Jeannie Callum, Director of Transfusion Medicine and Professor of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at Queens University in Ontario, Canada. Dr. Callum’s research focuses on blood utilization, hemostasis in the bleeding patient, and transfusion-related errors. That research and her book, Use of Intravenous Albumin: A Guideline from the International Collaboration for Transfusion Medicine Guidelines, help guide this deep-dive into the intricacies of albumin treatment. Congratulations to our hospital partners, who’ve been recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for outstanding performance with hospital readmissions. Among thousands of hospitals assessed, only 116 hospitals nationwide were recognized. Sound teams serve 12 of those hospitals, including the only two Texas hospitals recognized. We’re honored to work alongside you in our shared commitment to exceeding national benchmarks. We pride ourselves on tried-and-true readmissions workflows and collaborating with case management to identify barriers and avoidable delays. Our goal is to understand the patients’ needs once they leave the hospital and focus on helping them safely return home. September is officially Sepsis Awareness Month, but Dr. Hesham Hassaballa makes a compelling case for why sepsis awareness belongs to every month. “Sepsis is the No. 1 diagnosis we see in the ICU as critical care clinicians and one of the top killers of patients admitted to the ICU every single year,” Dr. Hassaballa said. In his blog on this “Chameleon Condition,” he sheds light on the unpredictable nature of sepsis and the importance of early detection and treatment. Drawing from his extensive experience, Dr. Hassaballa offers key insights every healthcare professional should know. Read the newest blog by following the link here: https://bit.ly/3ZAqMob
