What an incredible story! We were delighted to see one of our outreach teachers, Dawne Shaw, and a student, Zoie Goolsby, featured by WSPA News Channel 7. Inclusion is crucial, and learning how to communicate in ASL with your deaf and hard of hearing peers makes a significant difference. Thanks for learning how to sign the Pledge of Allegiance Starr Elementary friends! Beyond our Spartanburg campus, we provide statewide access to certified teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing in public school districts across the state, ensuring that deaf and hard of hearing students receive appropriate curriculum and instruction tailored to their needs. “The regular classroom uses a phonics-based curriculum, and that doesn’t work for her because she’s not hearing the phonics. For her, we’re using a specialized curriculum called Foundations for Literacy that’s developed for deaf children,” explained Dawne Shaw, Teacher of the Deaf at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. Foundations for Literacy is a one-of-a-kind, evidence-based intervention designed to provide students who are deaf and hard of hearing access to the sounds that English words produce. The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind Division of Outreach Services, in partnership with the SC Department of Education, has provided several trainings in this intervention and is currently in the process of providing additional trainings throughout the state. #EngageEmpowerEquip #HereforYou #WeareSCSDB https://lnkd.in/eaXf3urh

SCSDB officially turned 175 years old this week! Below is a special #175years message from SCSDB President, Jolene Madison. When the Reverend Newton Pinckney Walker recognized that children in SC who were deaf did not have access to appropriate instruction, he decided to do something about it. He researched deaf education and, in January of 1849, opened a school in Spartanburg and began providing quality school programming for five students who were deaf. Five years later, he followed suit by establishing a program as well for students who were blind. I wonder if he knew that his legacy would still be going strong nearly 175 years later. I wonder if he realized that he was paving the way for access, empowerment, and equity. I am grateful for the incredible visionaries who paved the way for us to engage, empower, and equip students for success. 175 years of service. 175 years of meeting the needs of students across South Carolina. Thank you for being part of our past, our present, and our future! #SCSDB175 #175years #EngageEmpowerEquip #Celebrate175
