Orange County's Tony Award-winning theatre.

About us

Tony Award-winning South Coast Repertory, under the artistic direction of David Emmes and Martin Benson, is widely recognized as one of the leading professional theaters in the United States. Founded in 1964, SCR is committed to theater that illuminates the compelling personal and social issues of our time, not only on its stages but through its education and outreach programs. While its productions represent a balance of classic and modern theater, SCR is renowned for its extensive new play development program, including the Pacific Playwrights Festival. Of SCR’s more than 400 productions, over 100 have been world premieres with subsequent stagings achieving enormous success across America and around the world. SCR-developed works have garnered eight Pulitzer Prize nominations with Margaret Edson’s Wit winning the prize in 1999 and David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole winning in 2007. Located in Costa Mesa, California, in 2002 SCR opened the Folino Theater Center, an expanded three-theater complex that includes the 507-seat Segerstrom Stage, the 336-seat Julianne Argyros Stage and the 94-seat Nicholas Studio.

Irreverent. Funny. Joyful. All words that describe "You Are Cordially Invited to the End of the World!", the last piece to our 2024-25 Season puzzle. We announced today that Keiko Green's heartfelt comedy about a family facing crisis and the oft-hilarious coping mechanisms they employ will occupy the previously to-be-announced open spot on our schedule. The world premiere takes the Segerstrom Stage, April 5-May 4, 2025 as one of the anchors to the 27th annual Pacific Playwrights Festival. "'You Are Cordially Invited to the End of the World!' is a powerful complement to the entirety of our 61st season," said SCR Artistic Director David Ivers. "It's incredibly special to have Keiko Green and her moving, irreverent play as an anchor to the Pacific Playwrights Festival. Keiko's writing is evocative and the play tackles undeniable truths in powerful and sometimes unimaginable ways." Read more on the SCR Blog. https://lnkd.in/g8TYe7HS

THIS JUST IN ... SCR announced today that Suzanne Appel will become the theatre’s new managing director. She’ll join SCR in early September as only the theatre’s second managing director in its 60-year history. The managing director at off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre for the last 7 1/2 years, Appel joins Artistic Director David Ivers as co-chief executive officer of the Tony Award-winning theatre. She succeeds Paula Tomei, who announced her departure in November after 44 years at SCR, the last 30 as managing director. “I am humbled by the opportunity to continue Paula’s incredible work providing Orange County audiences with access to theatre that has a national impact far beyond Southern California,” Appel said. “David Ivers’ commitment to supporting voices representing a broad diversity of American cultural experience, particularly through the Pacific Playwrights Festival, is simply inspiring. I am looking forward to joining David, the Board and the incredible team at SCR in welcoming audiences to share in the awe-inspiring theatre that awaits them at South Coast Repertory.” Read the full story on the SCR Blog https://lnkd.in/g9-krbP3

SCR takes no small measure of pride in our corporate benefactors, who not only understand the power, importance and vision of the arts, but support it through their generosity and patronage. We enjoy building beneficial relationships that help fulfill our mission to advance the art of theatre in the service of our community, and aim to extend that service through educational, intercultural, and community engagement programs that harmonize with our artistic mission. Farmers & Merchants Bank of Long Beach recently awarded SCR a $5,000 grant directed toward supporting the theatre’s vital services and programs. The bank’s foundation presented the check to SCR Managing Director Paula Tomei and SCR Board of Trustees Vice President of Development Michael Hards. https://lnkd.in/gWZFWTGn

The F&M Bank Foundation is proud to support South Coast Repertory, who has been committed to exploring timely human and social issues through the art of theatre since 1964. Happy Earth Day to our patrons, artists and staff. Did you know that the set from "Galilee, 34" is a model of sustainable design? Most of the set was repurposed from materials seen in other SCR productions. Sandra Goldmark, "Galilee, 34's" set designer, is one of the leading practitioners of sustainable design. You can see her set in "Galilee, 34", running through May 12. And you can read about it here on the SCR Blog. https://lnkd.in/gwmJd_YQ
