Commstock Channel's Marlin Bohling interviews Danita Murray, the executive director of the South Dakota Corn Growers Association, to unpack the upcoming vote on RL-21 and its ties to Senate Bill 201. In this discussion, Danita breaks down the bill’s implications for CO2 pipelines, explaining how Senate Bill 201 affects profit-sharing arrangements without changing eminent domain authority. They also cover the regulatory role of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), which assesses CO2 pipeline projects similar to other infrastructure. Danita emphasizes the importance of understanding landowners’ rights, which remain unaffected by the bill, and how county-level decisions may impact neighboring counties involved in pipeline projects. As they explore the future scope of this law and its application to new CO2 projects, Marlin and Danita stress the need for civil discourse, especially on issues as divisive as this within the farming community. Today's Harvest Update comes from SDCGA Secretary/Treasurer, Trent Kubik of Hamill, SD: Harvest of corn, soybeans, and milo are getting close to wrapping up in South Central South Dakota. Yields were shrunk to average to slightly above average thanks to a hot dry finish. Winter wheat planting is also nearing the finish line with no weather delays slowing us down. Former US Senator Tim Johnson served the people of South Dakota for 36 years. We are grateful for his dedication to the people in our state and honor his legacy. "Senator Johnson worked in a bipartisan fashion to help support the development of the biofuels industry because he wanted to help restore economic opportunity for farmers and rural communities. I was honored to serve on his staff for several years and look back with pride on how the work he and others put in to support biofuels have positively transformed rural America." - Brian Jennings, American Coalition for Ethanol CEO First elected to the state legislature in 1978, Tim won 16 consecutive primary and general elections to become the longest-serving public official in South Dakota history. Before retiring in 2015, he served two terms in the SD House of Representatives (1979-1983), two terms in the SD Senate (1983-1987), five terms in the US House of Representatives (1987-1997), and three terms in the US Senate (1997-2015).
