Our hearts are heavy as we witness gender and power-based violence persisting in our communities and echoing globally. Our series, Their Light Remains, was first held in 2022 to honor South Asian lives lost to gender-based violence in our communities. This year, in the face of multiple genocides and unspeakable acts of violence, we find ourselves once again grappling with the need for a space and way to grieve. With that, we offer Their Light Remains to honor the lives of: 💜 Jaahnavi Kandula (age 23), Santhalatha Rajan (age 51) & Anish Rajaram (age 19), Nabaruna Karmakar (age 33), Misbah Batool (age 32) & Iazia Zanoor (age 2), Pratibha Amarnath (age 35) & Yash Honnal (age 6), Diana (age 42), Sonal Parihar (age 42) & her two children (ages 10 & 6), Nityadevi Ramroop (age 35) We also honor the lives of: 💜 The martyrs we’ve lost to state-sponsored violence in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Kashmir, & so many more places around the world 💜 Wadea Al-Fayoume, Dr. Talat Jehan Khan, Jasmer Singh, and every other life lost to Islamophobia, anti-semitism, & other forms of hate 💜 And every survivor we’ve lost whose names we don’t and won’t know Find our toolkit, a journaling zine, and a letter to our community at: bit.ly/theirlightremains & follow along on our Instagram for the full series from 12/11 - 12/20. We’re sharing the findings with you in our new report: the State of the Field: Data from the Frontlines of South Asian GBV Work (bit.ly/sotfbysoar)💥 We believe this report holds the potential to reshape the landscape of support and services for South Asian survivors of gender-based violence, we can’t wait for you to take a look. Follow along on social media for the rest of #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth as we share the key findings with you here! Here’s a preview of what we learned: ❕South Asian survivors reported experiencing over 15 forms of GBV and abuse. ❕ Between 2020 & 2021, helpline calls to South Asian GBV organizations rose more than 15%, and the number of survivors served nearly doubled. ❕Less than half of the survivors served at each org are U.S. Citizens, while the rest hold different immigration statuses such as H-4 Status or Undocumented. ❕Almost 40% of the survivors served at each org are unemployed or under-employed. 👉🏽 Read the report at bit.ly/sotfbysoar 👉🏽 Make a donation to support our work this Domestic Violence Awareness Month 👉🏽 Share your thoughts and questions in the comments below! As summer comes to a close, our team has been filled with a mix of emotions. We’re excited to share the incredible progress and significant milestones we've achieved over the past year, but on the other hand, it feels challenging to celebrate our two-year journey when confronted with recent events that remind us of the very issues we're committed to ending. Over the past few weeks, we’ve noticed an emerging trend, one that mirrors what we experienced this time last year. In just a month, we've mourned several devastating losses due to acts of violence. These moments stir up a range of emotions – fear, anger, and grief, and at SOAR, we've always been committed to honoring the lives lost without sensationalizing their stories. Today, we honor the lives of Misabh & Iazia Zanoor, Prathibha & Yash Nagarajappa, Diana, and most recently, Jahnaavi Kandula. We stand in unwavering solidarity with survivors and are determined to continue building our collective power to prevent and end GBV. 🕊️ Amidst these circumstances, discovering the joy to commemorate two years of SOAR seems impossible, yet it underscores that this is the reality of our movement. With that in mind, we invite you to join us in commemorating two incredible years of SOAR with the release of our Annual Impact Report (https://lnkd.in/dtstp2Pm). 🧡 As you read it, we sincerely hope you feel the growing strength of our collective and community to prevent senseless acts of violence and pave the way for safer generations to come. We couldn't do this work without all of you, our foundation partners, our members, our board, and our team. Our hearts are full of gratitude! You can read the full report at https://lnkd.in/dtstp2Pm. And we’d LOVE to hear your thoughts and questions, always!
