About us

Welcome to the Southern Plains Tribal Health Board (SPTHB), a non-profit organization located in the heart of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Established in 1972, our mission is to serve as a unified voice, addressing the crucial tribal public health needs and policies of the 43 federally recognized tribes residing in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. As a proud organization, we are privileged to have representatives from the 12 service units in the Indian Health Service (IHS) Oklahoma Area as valued members of our board. At SPTHB, we play a vital role in fostering effective communication between the National Indian Health Board, which works closely with Congress and the Senate on Indian Health Policy for Indian Country, and the 43 federally recognized tribes within our region. Our primary objective is to enhance tribal public health outcomes for American Indians by forging strategic partnerships, engaging in advocacy efforts, providing educational resources, facilitating data and research initiatives, and offering comprehensive training programs. Through our dedicated efforts and collaborative approach, we strive to create positive and lasting impacts on the health and well-being of our tribal communities. Join us in our mission as we work tirelessly to champion the health needs of American Indians, ensuring a brighter and healthier future for all.

  • SPTHB is offering a new free online course! Weaving the Threads of Culture: Working Effectively with American Indians (AI) and Alaskan Natives (AN) is a series of lessons aimed at providing you with the information needed to improve your ability to communicate more effectively with the American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) community in which you work as a health provider, health planner, counselor or however you interact with the Native communities. The course will provide a view of many aspects of American Indian and Alaska Native culture and hopefully remove any stereotypes you may have acquired over your lifetime. Similar to the stages followed when weaving a blanket, a basket or a sash, each lesson will depict a different aspect of cultural competence. Just as all of these actions are necessary for the weaving to be a success, the lessons in this cultural competency course are necessary to help you work effectively with American Indians and Alaska Natives.
