We've come to the end of the road for the podcast series Tom Slick: Mystery Hunter podcast, based on the life SwRI founder Thomas Baker Slick Jr. In the final episode the podcast's creator interviewed Slick’s relatives about his real-life escapades versus the stories told in the scripted series. You’ll also hear from SwRI President and CEO Adam Hamilton who is helping to carry on his legacy. The mostly-true podcast is available wherever you listen. #TomSlickMysteryHunter

We are excited to share a new capability developed by our multidisciplinary team (Ty Templin, Brian Swenson, Koen Flores) at Southwest Research Institute for our ENABLE markerless biomechanics system (enable.swri.org), which enhances our ability to estimate the physiological and metabolic demands on muscles during physical activity. This new feature enables detailed insights into muscle activations and internal loads during physical activities from video footage. By integrating musculoskeletal modeling, machine vision, and artificial intelligence, we can now quantify muscle energy expenditure in almost any environment. This technology can be applied to training, rehabilitation, practice, and in-game play. This development enables new possibilities for more continuously analyzing metabolic demands, force distributions, and joint dynamics in real-world activities. It’s an exciting step toward better understanding internal load in athletes, rehabilitation patients, and beyond. #biomechanics #physiology #markerlessmotioncapture #sportsperformance #digitaltwin

Dr. Reynaldo Gonzales has returned after completing his PhD at the University of Texas at San Antonio and has joined Southwest Research Institute in Division 15, Space Science. Rey was my intern for two years and made significant contributions to the MAss Spectrometer for Planetary EXploration (MASPEX) pulsers. He wound all the magnetics for the high-voltage pulsers and assisted in bringing the pulsers up to operational status. The MASPEX instrument is aboard the Europa Clipper, currently at Cape Canaveral, being prepared for its launch on October 10, 2024. Not bad for someone just starting his engineering career and already having hardware flying in space!
