Changing Lives and Promoting Legacies of Inclusion through the Power of Sports

Today we lost a symbol of humanity before being one of the iconic sports journalists and an influential Arabic poet. I remember our first meeting as if it were yesterday, when I invited him to my office more than a quarter of a century ago, along with a group of senior sports journalists, specifically late 1998, to discuss forming a media committee to cover the First Special Olympics MENA Regional Games in Cairo in Jan 1999, which I had the honor of chairing its Local Organizing Committee. Since that date, he never failed Special Olympics one day, at all national, regional and international levels, working tirelessly with all his strength & time to develop the community public awareness for the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. He has always been a great supporter and advocate of our mission. He’s leaving a lasting impact on everyone who had the honor of working with him through his invaluable contributions, both professionally & personally. May God make them all in the balance of his good deeds... Amen…. We mourn with great sadness and sorrow The great journalist and virtuous poet Mr. Mohamed ElShahat Media Advisor Special Olympics MENA (1954-2024) Who passed away this morning after a life full of giving and love for everyone. We ask God Almighty to have mercy on him and to grant him a place in his spacious heavens and to inspire us and his family the patience and solace Special Olympics MENA

It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of our dear friend, Dikembe Mutombo. He was not only a towering figure on the basketball court but also a giant of compassion and humanity off it. His dedication to uplifting communities and his efforts in humanitarianism, including his unforgettable work with the Starkey Hearing Foundation in 2014 serving Kinshasa, Congo, left a mark on the world and so many of us. Dikembe's life was a testament to love and kindness, and his heartwarming spirit touched countless lives. We are forever grateful for his support of our Foundation and the light and care he brought to so many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Sending all our love, light, and prayers to Rose and the children. #DikembeMutombo #BasketballLegend #Humanitarian

Special Olympics is shocked and saddened by today's news of the passing of our Global Ambassador and board member Dikembe Mutombo. Dikembe's impact on the #InclusionRevolution was profound; from establishing the first-ever Special Olympics program in his native Congo, to participating in many Special Olympics Unified events, he was a true champion of inclusion. This ESPN video of Dikembe during the #SpecialOlympics World Games in Abu Dhabi 2019 sums up his spirit, warmth and generosity. Rest in peace, "Mount Mutombo". You were a colossus on and off the basketball court.

The Special Olympics community around the world is heartbroken to learn of the death of our friend, role model, and international board member, Dikembe Mutombo. Dikembe traveled the world for our movement, and whether in Japan, China, South Africa, or the USA, he brought a joy for life, a love of sport, and a profound belief in the greatness of #SpecialOlympics athletes. He was more than a Hall of Fame basketball ball player: he was a Hall of Fame humanitarian. Our prayers are with Rose, his children, and all who loved him.
