On August 20, Sprouts Chef Training hosted a dynamic leadership session led by Steven Weinbaum from OpenTable. Steven emphasized that true leadership goes beyond guiding tasks—it's about genuinely connecting with others. Here are some key takeaways that resonated with our team: Leadership Beyond Titles Leadership isn’t limited to managers. Anyone at any level can lead by example. We’re dedicated to fostering a team where each person can step up as a leader, driving growth in both culinary and personal development. Growth Mindset and Curiosity Curiosity fuels improvement. By staying open to new ideas, asking questions, and seeking better ways to do things, we elevate ourselves and our team—aligning with our mission of culinary excellence. The Power of Connection and Humility Leadership starts with understanding others’ unique experiences. Listening and connecting on a personal level fosters a culture of respect, something we prioritize at Sprouts. Leadership is more than authority; it’s about treating each individual with respect. We’re excited to see each team member grow as a leader, in the kitchen and beyond. Thanks to Steven and the OpenTable team for an impactful session!

We’re thrilled to be featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer, highlighting the launch of our first Sprouts Chef Training cohort in Philadelphia this spring! Special thanks to Philly’s hospitality leaders, including Ellen Yin of High Street Hospitality and Fork, along with Fia Berisha and Nicholas Elmi of BE Hospitality, for championing our mission. Together, we’re working to raise $40,000 by the end of 2024 to support training and compensation for a new cohort of aspiring Philly chefs in spring 2025. As Ellen Yin shared, “The hospitality industry can provide a stable and lucrative job opportunity… I think it is a huge opportunity for people.” We’re grateful for this community’s commitment to building pathways for future culinary talent. Thank you to the Kenmore team for sharing Emilio's inspiring story with your community and for your incredible support making stories like this one come to life! 💚 🌟
Meet Emilio 🌿 Kenmore is a proud supporter of Sprouts Chef Training, a non-profit focused on providing at-risk youth with life-changing skills in the kitchen. Cooking can open doors for career opportunities, enable healthier lifestyles, and even build relationships as family and friends gather to prepare and share meals together. The work Sprouts is doing to connect young students with highly-gifted chefs, as well as learning and job development support will stay with them a lifetime. Read more on Emilio and his journey below! ____ Emilio was familiar with his mom’s response if someone in his family didn’t like what she’d prepared for dinner: “If you don’t like it, make something yourself.” Emilio put this advice into practice and soon discovered a love of cooking. He also realized that cooking with friends made the experience even better, and began creating new recipes with their help. It was this enjoyment that eventually led Emilio to intern with Sprouts Chef Training, working at both alaMar and Sobre Mesa, under mentor Chef Nelson German. One aspect Emilio most enjoyed about his internship was getting to know his coworkers. “I’ve never gotten along with coworkers [so well]” he remarked. He especially liked working with Chef Miguel, who always took the time to demonstrate new skills to Emilio, and could answer any questions he had. During his internship, Emilio got to try plating, mise en place, kitchen storage and organization, and improve his knife skills. As Emilio became more familiar with the recipes at both restaurants, he began to memorize them, and was able to tell if a dish was ready just by how it looked! A lesson that helped Emilio while trying new skills in the kitchen was that failure wasn’t always a bad thing, and could help you in the long run. This persistence helped him pick up kitchen skills quickly. Emilio is interested in becoming a chef at his own restaurant one day. He likes the idea of being able to create his own menu and that he can cater to flavors he enjoys. When Emilio isn’t inventing new dishes, he can be found building things, such as a kit his friend gave him that allowed him to build a model of the Millenium Falcon. Emilio is grateful for his internship. We at Sprouts Chef Training know that Emilio’s dedication, determination, and passion for cooking will take him far in life. Photo Credit: Lauren Unger
