Workshop Recap: Inclusive Communication with Paul Huynh On December 5th, Sprouts Chef Training had the privilege of hosting a transformative workshop: "Inclusive Communication: Practical and Dynamic Strategies to Foster Connection", led by the exceptional Paul Huynh. Paul brought over 15 years of global experience in business development, strategic partnerships, and leadership to guide us through understanding communication styles and their impact on team dynamics. Before the workshop, Paul provided our team with a Communication Styles Worksheet to identify our natural tendencies—whether as Energizers, Systemizers, Associators, or Innovators. This foundation set the stage for an engaging session where we: - Explored how communication styles influence roles within an organization. - Mapped team members' roles to their communication strengths, uncovering incredible alignment within Sprouts Chef Training. - Learned strategies to collaborate effectively across styles, emphasizing empathy, mutual understanding, and leveraging diverse strengths for maximum impact. Paul’s insights and practical exercises highlighted the power of inclusivity in communication and its role in fostering stronger connections and driving team success. A huge thank you to Paul for his leadership and expertise, and to the Sprouts team for their enthusiasm and participation. Together, we’re building a more connected and dynamic organization!

Cultivating Calm and Clarity Through Mindfulness with Scott Robinson On October 16, our team had the privilege of learning from Scott Robinson, founder of Yogibanker, who introduced us to the science and practice of meditation and mindfulness. Scott highlighted the powerful ways mindfulness can enhance our daily lives: - Meta-awareness: Becoming more aware of our thoughts and reactions - Emotional intelligence: Cultivating patience and compassion - Clarity & calm: Gaining mental clarity and reducing stress - Physical health: Experiencing health benefits like lowered blood pressure - Joy & compassion: Nurturing a sense of joy and empathy toward others Scott shared the core steps of mindfulness meditation, reminding us that a wandering mind is essential to the process: 1. Place the mind on a chosen focus (like the breath) 2. Recognize when the mind has wandered 3. Re-place the mind on the focus, without judgment The wandering mind, Scott explained, is a valuable part of mindfulness—it’s the act of noticing and refocusing that builds resilience and self-compassion. Scott then guided us through a group meditation that left us all feeling centered and refreshed. As we move toward the new year, we’re excited to carry these mindfulness practices with us, using meditation to bring greater calm, focus, and positivity into 2024. Thank you, Scott and Yogibanker, for giving us tools to build a more mindful, intentional work environment!

The Power of Storytelling in Philanthropy On July 23, we were excited to host John Muhlbauer and Amanda Weitman from Wells Fargo, who shared their insights on storytelling as a powerful tool in philanthropy. Here are some of the key lessons: Crafting the Right Story John and Amanda stressed the importance of knowing your audience and matching the story to shared values. Practicing and refining this approach helps us genuinely connect with people, communicating our mission in a way that feels both authentic and compelling. Identifying Societal Benefits Understanding the societal impact of Sprouts Chef Training gives us the confidence to share our stories and seek support. When we’re clear about the positive effects of our work, we can communicate our mission with a sense of purpose, ensuring others feel the importance of their support. The Role of Values in Storytelling Values are at the heart of connection. By aligning our stories with the values of our audience, we can move beyond simple transactions, creating relationships that are built on shared purpose and a commitment to positive change. This session reminded us that storytelling isn’t just about speaking—it’s about connecting on what truly matters. Thank you to John, Amanda, and Wells Fargo for this inspiring session!

On August 20, Sprouts Chef Training hosted a dynamic leadership session led by Steven Weinbaum from OpenTable. Steven emphasized that true leadership goes beyond guiding tasks—it's about genuinely connecting with others. Here are some key takeaways that resonated with our team: Leadership Beyond Titles Leadership isn’t limited to managers. Anyone at any level can lead by example. We’re dedicated to fostering a team where each person can step up as a leader, driving growth in both culinary and personal development. Growth Mindset and Curiosity Curiosity fuels improvement. By staying open to new ideas, asking questions, and seeking better ways to do things, we elevate ourselves and our team—aligning with our mission of culinary excellence. The Power of Connection and Humility Leadership starts with understanding others’ unique experiences. Listening and connecting on a personal level fosters a culture of respect, something we prioritize at Sprouts. Leadership is more than authority; it’s about treating each individual with respect. We’re excited to see each team member grow as a leader, in the kitchen and beyond. Thanks to Steven and the OpenTable team for an impactful session!

Thank you to the Kenmore team for sharing Emilio's inspiring story with your community and for your incredible support making stories like this one come to life! 💚 🌟
Meet Emilio 🌿 Kenmore is a proud supporter of Sprouts Chef Training, a non-profit focused on providing at-risk youth with life-changing skills in the kitchen. Cooking can open doors for career opportunities, enable healthier lifestyles, and even build relationships as family and friends gather to prepare and share meals together. The work Sprouts is doing to connect young students with highly-gifted chefs, as well as learning and job development support will stay with them a lifetime. Read more on Emilio and his journey below! ____ Emilio was familiar with his mom’s response if someone in his family didn’t like what she’d prepared for dinner: “If you don’t like it, make something yourself.” Emilio put this advice into practice and soon discovered a love of cooking. He also realized that cooking with friends made the experience even better, and began creating new recipes with their help. It was this enjoyment that eventually led Emilio to intern with Sprouts Chef Training, working at both alaMar and Sobre Mesa, under mentor Chef Nelson German. One aspect Emilio most enjoyed about his internship was getting to know his coworkers. “I’ve never gotten along with coworkers [so well]” he remarked. He especially liked working with Chef Miguel, who always took the time to demonstrate new skills to Emilio, and could answer any questions he had. During his internship, Emilio got to try plating, mise en place, kitchen storage and organization, and improve his knife skills. As Emilio became more familiar with the recipes at both restaurants, he began to memorize them, and was able to tell if a dish was ready just by how it looked! A lesson that helped Emilio while trying new skills in the kitchen was that failure wasn’t always a bad thing, and could help you in the long run. This persistence helped him pick up kitchen skills quickly. Emilio is interested in becoming a chef at his own restaurant one day. He likes the idea of being able to create his own menu and that he can cater to flavors he enjoys. When Emilio isn’t inventing new dishes, he can be found building things, such as a kit his friend gave him that allowed him to build a model of the Millenium Falcon. Emilio is grateful for his internship. We at Sprouts Chef Training know that Emilio’s dedication, determination, and passion for cooking will take him far in life. Photo Credit: Lauren Unger
