The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) has published the first national voluntary consensus standard addressing heat stress for workers in construction and demolition operations. Hundreds of thousands of workers often face outdoor hazards such as high heat and humidity. When following this standard, employers will develop written heat stress management programs to assist in reducing the risk of occupational heat-related illness at construction and demolition sites. Written programs will be initiated before beginning work on any task anticipated to cause worker exposures above the initial trigger of 70 WBGT (approximately 80°F heat index. The new standard includes requirements to provide potable water and electrolytes for employees involved with heavy work activities greater than 2 hours. https://lnkd.in/gwCG8FEQ The new ANSI standard mimics prior hydration recommendations from NIOSH which recommend providing adequate amounts of cool, potable water and during pro-longed sweating lasting more than 2 hours, workers should be provided with electrolyte beverages that contain balanced electrolytes to replace those lost during sweating, as long as the concentration of electrolytes/carbohydrates does not exceed 8% by volume.
