  • Let’s Talk About Ageism. Ageism refers to stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination toward others or oneself based on age. According to a 2020 poll from the National Poll on Healthy Aging found that 82% of adults ages 50–80 experience ageism daily. Those experiencing multiple forms of ageism are more likely to have chronic health conditions and depression. Ageism shows up in many ways including: - Internalized ageism: how older adults may internalize negative beliefs about aging - Implicit ageism: Unconscious biases that influence our perceptions and behaviors - Interpersonal ageism: Direct comments or actions that reflect ageist beliefs, often even when intended positively. - Cultural ageism: Negative message messages about aging perpetuated in media and entertainment - Institutional ageism: Law and policies that unfairly restrict opportunities based on age. Ageism affects our health and well-being, has economic consequences, and are encountered in healthcare and the workplace. It’s time to recognize and address ageism in all its forms. Let’s promote awareness and advocate for a more inclusive society that values the contribution of people of all ages.
