In the second episode of our "Scaling Better" series, Stage Six Inc. and SHONA asked Kidogo and EarthEnable to share practical lessons about ways to work successfully with local partners to increase social impact and serve more people. They both partner with franchisees and describe how they chose the role and duties performed by their local partner enterprises. See below for specific lessons about the factors that should guide decisions by your enterprise about the functions assigned to partners. Their goals when engaging partners were to increase their capacity to serve more people, ensure quality services to customers, grow their social impact, and build a lasting, mutually accountable relationship with their local partners. Each have approached this differently. Help us build a body of evidence around this important topic by sharing your own experience -- what has, and equally important, has not worked?

Welcome back to the 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 webinar series! After determining that profitable elements of your #enterprise can be delegated to your partner organizations (i.e., #franchisees, #distributors, and branch managers) in Lesson #1, today’s lesson emphasizes the importance of identifying essential business functions and their processes. 🟣𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 #𝟑: 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧/ 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫 When deciding which essential #business functions to assign to a partner, prioritize those that offer flexibility in execution within the enterprise. Functions that do not follow a strict standard protocol or process are often best suited for partnership delegation. ✨For Kidogo, providing daycare services was essential, and there is flexibility in how these are delivered by local partners. Contrary to this, the production of porridge is essential too, but there is little flexibility in how it is produced if quality and efficiency are to be achieved. Hence, Kidogo produces the porridge in-house and distributes it to the local daycare partners. ✨For EarthEnable, floor preparation is essential, and there is #flexibility in how it is performed. Hence, it is a function of a franchise partner. Contrary, the production of the finishing oil that EarthEnable uses to seal the floors is very essential, and its process follows a strict standard protocol and is not flexible, so EarthEnable produces the oil in-house and distributes it to its local partners. 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒊𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒇𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒆: ➡️𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Assigning functions where there can be flexibility in how they’re performed by local partners allows the entrepreneur to learn from the experience of their network of partners about which methods work best and when. · ➡️𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠: The speakers emphasized the value of “ruthless prioritization” as an enterprise grows. Regularly evaluating and re-evaluating whether a function is truly essential will help the #entrepreneur further streamline the enterprise. Streamlining helps control the growth of complexity as the enterprise scales. ➡️𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 #𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬: By identifying essential functions that are flexible in their implementation vs those that are not flexible, an enterprise can ensure consistent quality while working with partners (franchisees, branch managers, distributors). Ready for Lesson #2 in our “𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫” series? After diving into the importance of setting clear standards and fostering a culture of accountability with Jibu Inc. in Lesson #1, it’s time to explore another vital growth strategy! Lesson #2: "𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞." Both Endiro Coffee and Jibu have mastered this approach, developing efficient templates for expanding their operations. From Endiro’s strategic coffee shop format within established businesses to Jibu’s international franchise expansion, they’ve set stellar examples demonstrating the power of a well-structured replication model. This session uncovers how Endiro has honed a coffee shop format that seamlessly integrates into established businesses, meeting specific market demands. It has developed efficient templates for expanding its operations - be it guidebooks, manuals, or videos - and the comprehensive training processes that support them. Elements of the template can be tailored to the location or the new customer segment, but the fundamentals essential to the brand and the customer experience remain consistent. 𝑬𝒙𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒃𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒇𝒊𝒕𝒔:  ⏩The time and cost required to open new locations were reduced. ⏩Supports a consistent customer experience across locations, which sustains and strengthens the brand. ⏩Allows use of a common personnel training program across sites and a uniform set of core management and oversight procedures supporting quality and efficiency. ⏩Consistent marketing procedures and templates can increase the impact of marketing resources and enable frontline personnel and customers to increase the reach of marketing efforts at low cost. #BusinessGrowth #SocialImpact #Entrepreneurship #Business #Africa #Uganda #Kenya #Business #DoingBusiness

In December, we had our first “𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫: 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭” webinar series, a collaboration between #SHONA and Stage Six Inc. Our mission is to empower growth enterprises to scale their businesses and amplify their impact through storytelling and learning from other’s experiences. In our first session, we were privileged to have Jibu Inc. and Endiro Coffee share invaluable insights from their growth journeys. 𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝: ➡️Jibu exemplifies this principle by setting clear standards, metrics, and SOPs for four crucial pillars: product/service quality, customer service, sales, and operations. Through robust communication channels such as training, written agreements, and management reporting, Jibu ensures alignment across its personnel, including staff and franchisees. ➡️The standards set by Jibu focus on essentials that deliver value to customers, reduce costs, and safeguard the brand. Franchisees receive guidance while having the flexibility to adapt operations to their unique markets and customers. ➡️Jibu doesn't just stop at setting standards; it establishes compelling incentives and penalties to foster a culture of accountability. High-performing franchises are rewarded through quality compliance audits and customer satisfaction surveys. Simultaneously, poor performers face consequences, including cash penalties or license termination for persistent non-compliance. ➡️The consistent implementation of this system builds a robust culture supporting quality, consistency, sales, and an unparalleled customer experience. 𝑬𝒙𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒃𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒇𝒊𝒕𝒔:  ⏩Jibu can efficiently assure quality and consistency across over 175 franchisee locations in 8 countries. ⏩Jibu can communicate its performance expectations when recruiting staff and franchisees and assess the capability of prospective staff/franchisees to meet these expectations. ⏩Jibu’s systems and communications reinforce these expectations, which fosters a culture of accountability among staff and franchisees. #BusinessGrowth #SocialImpact #Entrepreneurship #Business #Entrepreneurs #Networks
