    I loooooved getting this email from a client last night. ❤️❤️❤️ We just wrapped up our contract to help build their values-based individual giving program while launching a comprehensive campaign. This is a small but mighty team (for most of the campaign it was just two people doing fundraising as only part of their job- and now they’ve hired one fundraiser 🎉). They worked to keep values centered, and worked harder not to let other less sustainable fundraising derail what they were building. And they made asks! So what did the email say? 🤠🤠🤠 They got an answer back on their first six figure ask of and individual donor🥁🥁🥁🥁 The donor shared with the fundraiser that they: 📣are awed by the org’s plans (trust me they’re big and bold!) 📣want to contribute $100,000. 📣believe the org “knows best” when to get and and how to use the gift 📣pledged to keep their annual support the same Yes! This is values-based major giving, ya’ll. Ease and joy. That’s what feel good fundraising is about.     Hey, major donor fundraisers. 👋🏻 I know many of you are feeling the pressure of year-end – trying to make those final cultivation touches so you can feel good about asking for a big gift soon. It can be challenging work – cutting through the noise of life to reach people, mustering the emotional energy to make one more call or send one more note. So much schmoozing. 😔 It can also be SOOOO rewarding 💯 when you make a real connection with someone who shares your organization’s values and passion for the mission. So, how’s it going for you?   • With events, appeals, and campaigns piling up, figuring out the right way to ask for that meaningful gift can feel overwhelming. Early on, we just didn't do it. Plain and simple. We let those donors who loved the mission the most give at the event or when they got the appeal or maybe after a little gentle group prodding at the board meeting. These are the donors you can always count on to make a gift at the fundraiser and to the appeal, so what more do they need? You're busy and why change it if it's not broken, right? Wrong. We did it wrong for years and left A LOT of money for our missions on the table. 😢 After more than five combined decades of nonprofit fundraising experience, we’ve learned a vital lesson: major donors, those people who are deeply with you on the change you seek, will likely give when asked through less direct methods —but they are often not giving their largest and most meaningful gift.   •    How do you define “major donor?”    For too long, fundraisers – Laura and Sarah included – defined major donor solely by how much they were giving. Or, worse, how much we thought they could give. 🤢    We gave too much power to wealthy people or people we guessed might be wealthy.     It was bad for our missions, for our communities, for our donors, and for our fundraisers.    It was bad for us and it felt icky.
