When stuck in unfathomable hardship (or even just a little difficulty), people with resilience dig up, not down. What??! (We hope that caught your attention!) When we’re stuck in problem-land, most of us take a problem-solving approach. We dig down to figure out how it happened, why it happened, when it started happening, and all the factors associated with the problem. The process features a lot of “why” questions that focus on understanding and introspection. People with resilience dig up instead. They look far and wide for resources and solutions. They ask, “How do I get out of this mess?” “What can I use to take the smallest doable step forward?” “What if I do this or that, how will that work?” They look for “what” and “how” not “why” in a process that is action oriented. The next time you notice yourself in a tough situation, even if it’s just a tiny bit tough, notice: Are you digging down or digging up? Do You Know the Rules? Resilience is complex, multidimensional, and dynamic in nature, so knowing the rules is imperative.
