A global campaign to help millions of women realize land rights in their daily lives
About us
The Stand for Her Land Campaign is closing the implementation gap for women’s land rights: the gulf between the strong standards in place to protect women’s rights to land, and the realization of those rights in practice, so that millions of women can realize the transformational power of rights to land. Stand for Her Land drives lasting change on the ground through collective action and advocacy at grassroots, national, and global levels.

👀 Take a peek into our first week at the UNCBD #COP16Colombia with our S4HL Global representative, Beth Roberts! 🌍 Beth was on a panel for the "Defending the Women Who Defend the Planet" session that spotlighted the vital role of women in conserving our planet’s biodiversity. Women of all backgrounds deserve a central place in shaping policies that protect nature. 💜 She also had the chance to meet up with Jennifer Twyman and María Camila Barerra Gutierrez from our S4HL Colombia coalition! It was such a joy to connect face-to-face and strengthen our shared commitment to women's land rights. 🙂 Together, we’re championing women’s full participation at every level to drive sustainable solutions for a thriving, equitable world! 🌍 For International Rural Womens' Day (Oct. 15), Stand4HerLandTanzania along with coalition members Landesa, We Effect East Africa, TAWLA TANZANIA WOMEN LAWYERS ASSOCIATION, and Tanzania Land Alliance hosted an empowering Rural Women Forum in Nkulabi Village, Dodoma region. ♀ Over 250 grassroots women came together to discuss their challenges around land rights and develop an action plan on how to address those challenges. Key takeaways included: 1️⃣ Customary norms still limit women's ability to own land. 2️⃣ Patriarchy often restricts land ownership to men, rooted in family lineage. 3️⃣ Lack of education on women’s land rights continues to deny many women their rights. Education is key! 4️⃣ Women’s participation in land decision-making remains low—encouraging them to step up, especially in the upcoming local elections. 5️⃣ Women’s role in agriculture and food security must be recognized to ensure they benefit from their hard work. 💬 The discussions were led by grassroots women with the objective of enhancing their voice, agency, and leadership on matters relating to their land rights. 🙌 Let’s keep the momentum going! #Stand4HerLand #WomensLandRights #RuralVoices

🔶 Engaging Young People in Land Governance 🔶 We recently held a dialogue on youth participation in land governance at Kyambogo University, drawing students from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. Recognizing that youth are the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators, it’s essential to address how often their roles in decision-making are overlooked. This dialogue provided a valuable platform for students to share their insights, experiences, and aspirations regarding land ownership, sustainable practices, and equitable access. It became evident that youth voices must be heard and included in discussions that impact their lives and the future of their communities. YADNET UGANDA Stand for Her Land

Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia recently collaborated with the women-led Siiqqee Women’s Development Association to host a focus group discussion addressing the social norms impacting women’s land rights in rural areas. The event brought together representatives from women’s associations, grassroots communities, traditional courts, community leaders, and government institutions. Held under the Stand for Her Land Project, the discussion highlighted key barriers preventing women from claiming and exercising their land rights. Despite legal provisions for equality, social norms continue to favor men as primary land inheritors, and many women remain unaware of their legal rights. Additionally, societal attitudes and prejudice discourage women from asserting their rights, perpetuating unequal inheritance practices. The discussion provided valuable insights that will contribute to developing a comprehensive approach for strengthening women’s land rights. #landrightsforwomen #S4HL #LandRights
