I am very excited to share my latest research on low-carbon ammonia production strategies in the US and Canada! With these two countries contributing 11% of global ammonia production, our study dives deep into the distinct decarbonization policies that shape their paths toward a sustainable future. We explore how the US tax credits and Canada's carbon tax drive different strategies—whether it’s wind energy, solar energy, biomass, biomass+carbon capture and storage (CCS), or SMR+CCS for hydrogen production. Our results show that Canada's carbon tax incentivizes the adoption of CCS, while US production tax credits promote the use of wind energy and biomass+CCS for hydrogen production in ammonia synthesis. These findings highlight how tailored policy approaches, like production tax credits and carbon taxes, can effectively drive the transition to low-carbon ammonia production and serve as a model for other regions globally. It was a great week discussing the role of natural gas in achieving a net-zero world at the Stanford Natural Gas Initiative annual symposium. Thank you to all the speakers and attendees for the active engagement and dialogue. My favorite thing about events at Stanford is that we dive deep into the details that must be addressed as we build the energy system of the future. I left this conversation feeling optimistic that the best and brightest are going to figure out optimized solutions that provide clean, affordable, reliable and secure energy for all. Some of the key discussion topics: • Mitigating methane emissions is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to reduce emissions today. We have the technologies to measure methane but repairs are expensive and putting effective policy in place remains challenging. • Natural gas is critical today for supporting intermittent renewables, providing resilience and reliability, but we need more integration of the grid and gas systems. • Models indicate that we can achieve over 80% decarbonization with wind, solar, hydro, batteries and natural gas. Adding hydrogen, biofuels and carbon capture and storage gets us the last 20% but will be very costly.

Such an honor to participate in the hydrogen policy panel discussion at the World Electrolysis conference with my distinguished colleagues Roxana Bekemohammadi Sam F. Savitz Patrick Molloy. The policies in place today (45V, 45Q, etc) are initiating the markets through production inventives, but are the first step in a long-term policy framework that will get us to a thriving low-carbon hydrogen economy. There is a lot of work happening on next phase policies to really scale these markets. Sam shared the great work going on at Energy Futures Initiative leading the H2DI (demand initiative). Patrick discussed the need for infrastructure and the RMI North American Hydrogen Backbone project. The Stanford Hydrogen Initiative continues to bring researchers together to develop the pioneering policy strategies and technologies necessary to make our nation’s hydrogen vision a reality. I shared some recent work on how policy impacts the choice of decarbonization strategies for ammonia plants. We need to be thoughtful in our use of carrots and sticks, but ultimately there is a real sense of optimism and I am humbled by the creativity I see from the innovators working to build the clean energy system of the future.

Had an amazing opportunity to witness the scale of decarbonization at the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles with the Hydrogen student club and future members of the Sustainable Mobility student club. It was the first-ever Stanford student field trip to these two largest ports in the US, and it was truly a joy to see the immensity of the project.
