When Culture and Strategy Fail by Jeff Jernigan, PhD Director, Stanton Chase Los Angeles Peter Drucker envisioned business success as a product of culture and strategy alignment. A company can fail when an organization's culture is at odds with corporate strategy. Then, how do you explain a company’s failure when those are aligned? A company may fail for many external reasons, but often, the key is an internal failure that emerges slowly to a point where recovery is challenging. An OEM manufacturing client encountered problems when its large-scale organizational change plan crashed halfway to the finish line. The plan's alignment with corporate strategy was fine, but its alignment with the business plan was the problem. This oversight led to a growing gap between the changing business realities that needed to be accommodated on the manufacturing floor and the requirements of the large-scale change management plan. Changing the nature of the work done ultimately changes work culture and its alignment with corporate strategy. This graphic demonstrates what happens when the business and change plans are not aligned. The solution is to align large-scale organizational changes with the business plan and overall strategy. That way, there is no reality gap, regardless of how you structure your large-scale organizational change project. Also, check out SCLA.Services to learn more about our Leadership Advisory Services. About us
Stanton Chase was founded because the execution of professional services at the large firms in our industry was suffering from a lack of purposeful, individual care. As leaders of companies start to understand the importance of meaningful connections—both with their employees as well as with their partners—the focus on helping candidates and clients form strong, personal relationships with each other became the core of what drives us. Our goal was to create an organization where a culture of friendship and trust would ultimately become a harbinger of good business. And our desire to achieve the highest standards of professionalism in our industry would help us out-care and out-serve the competition. This fundamental belief and desire to collaborate with our teammates in an atmosphere of transparency and candor, while maintaining admiration and respect for one another, has been the real catalyst that has enabled us to grow from six offices to seventy-five offices since 1990. What’s special about Stanton Chase Los Angeles, is that we’re a team always seeking to make a difference. It’s a mindset and culture, focused on caring, for management of our clients and each candidate. People on our team are committed to being in constant communication with our clients, both when they need to attract the best, ‘right fit’ leaders, and beyond as their partner for introductions of resources (people and services). Truly caring about them brings amazing results. Knowledge to best represent who they are. A sounding board. Offer programs of value to their talent. Friendships. And more. We’ve experienced it before, and see it happening here. We’re creating and making a difference for our community.

We have just wrapped up our 68th Global Partners Meeting in Budapest and what an inspiring week it has been! While we covered key business topics and had our fair share of fun, the standout moment? A masterclass from none other than Judit Polgar, the strongest female chess player in history. Judit Polgar's presentation wasn't just about chess—it was a lesson in strategic excellence. She proved that true talent development isn't about quick wins, but long-term strategy and adaptability. Judit Polgar's insights hit home—in chess and business, the real winners are those who can see beyond the immediate and plan for what's next. That's the kind of foresight we are after in leaders. A big thank you to Stanton Chase Budapest for hosting and to all the global partners who joined. Let's continue to grow together and shape the future! #Leadership #CSuite #StrategicThinking #ExecutiveSearch
