International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP)
Government Administration
The premier professional exchange program of the U.S. Department of State.
About us
The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. Through short-term visits to the United States, current and emerging foreign leaders in a variety of fields experience this country firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts. Professional meetings reflect the participants’ professional interests and support the foreign policy goals of the United States. Since its launch in 1940, more than 200,000 participants have engaged with Americans through the IVLP, including more than 500 current or former Chiefs of State or Heads of Government. There is no application for IVLP. Participants are nominated by U.S. Embassies around the world. For those who live in the United States, there are many opportunities to get involved at the community level. Visit the Global Ties U.S. website (globaltiesus.org) for a list of community-based IVLP partners.

"I take it upon myself to try and be that person who's explaining something to ...[my audiences], whether it's a corruption case, whether it's political scandal or whether it's someone destroying the environment in Malaysia somewhere and they want to understand who or why is behind it," says influencer, journalist, and International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) #ExchangeAlumni Iqbal Fatkhi. Ella Marina Konan, a STEM expert and IVLP alumna from Côte d’Ivoire, is leading change in the field of STEM education and gender equality through her 2024 IVLP Impact Award project, "THE DECLIC: Boost Next Generation Women in STEM.” This project encourages young girls in secondary education to embrace STEM subjects and careers through immersive scientific experiences. By raising awareness about overcoming social prejudices and psychological barriers, Ella is creating a supportive framework for young girls to connect with female mentors in STEM and engage in practical STEM activities. Ella shared that her IVLP exchange experience in the United States led to the design of this project, “During my IVLP experience, I learned through our visits to STEM centers in Pensacola that teaching children about science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on experience propels their creativity and sense of innovation, and helps break the myth of science, especially for girls.” Read more about Ella’s IVLP Impact Award project here: https://lnkd.in/eVxxMk6z #HiddenNoMore | #IVLP | #ExchangeAlumni - Alumni Affairs - State Dept.#ExchangeAlumni - Alumni Affairs - State Dept. | Institute of International Education | Gulf Coast Diplomacy | WorldChicago | International Citizen Diplomacy of Los Angeles (ICDLA) | #WomenInSTEM Pensacola MESS Hall

This week, the U.S. Department of State welcomed over 30 international experts and leaders from NATO member states and aspirant countries to the United States for an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) focused on the enduring legacy and future of the NATO alliance. In Washington, DC; Annapolis and Baltimore, MD; Norfolk, VA; and Colorado Springs, CO, the IVLP participants will engage in discussions with their American counterparts on outcomes of the July 2024 NATO Summit in Washington, DC, and strategies to counter military and non-military threats posed by disinformation, cyber-attacks, and other contemporary challenges. These meetings will also take a closer look at U.S. efforts to bolster key alliances and partnerships, U.S.-NATO military coordination, and support for NATO through domestic mechanisms like the National Guard Bureau’s State Partnership Program. NATO is a cornerstone of global security that defends our shared values of democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law. Through this program, we are expanding the connections, knowledge, and capacity of Americans and our partners who are committed to strengthening this key alliance. #IVLP | #WeAreNATO | NATO | United States Department of Defense | Meridian International Center | Colorado Springs World Affairs Council | World Trade Center Institute

Young European leaders recently participated in an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) to examine current political, economic, and social issues at the federal, state, and local levels in the United States. They traveled across the country to explore the historical and constitutional foundations behind U.S. policies and key issues such as environmental sustainability, energy, education, and more. Some highlights of the IVLP: 📍 In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at Carroll University, the participants led a panel discussion on European issues such as migration and the war in Ukraine. They also met with the former Majority Leader of the Wisconsin State Assembly. 📍 In Colorado Springs, Colorado, the group had an incredible opportunity to visit the U.S. Olympic Training Center. 📍 In Raleigh, North Carolina, the group met with the North Carolina General Assembly (NCGA), the legislature of the North Carolina state government. Thank you to all our IVLP partners for making this exchange possible! #IVLP | World Learning | International Focus | International Institute of Wisconsin | Colorado Springs World Affairs Council | Global Ties KC
