Day 1 & Day 2 of the GAVI INFUSE 2024 Workshop on "Public Health and Climate Resilience" It was an incredible experience to be part of the GAVI INFUSE 2024 workshop in Nairobi, where we had the opportunity to present VaccineLedger—an innovative platform that delivers next-gen visibility and transparency for public health supply chains. Over the two days of the workshop, Mansi Shah and A D N SARMA engaged with the top 10 global innovators, collaborating on solutions to build resilient, climate-adaptive healthcare systems, where we highlighted how VaccineLedger supports country-wide deployments to strengthen immunization supply chains, ensuring better vaccine availability, improved coverage rates, and reduced stockouts. On how our platform tracks vaccines from procurement to the last mile, preventing waste by ensuring near-expiry doses are identified early and used efficiently, thus reducing environmental impact through reverse logistics and waste management. We also emphasized the role of modern technologies like Blockchain, AI, and IoT in addressing critical gaps in public health—especially in regions that rely heavily on manual processes. VaccineLedger offers offline capabilities, localization, and real-time tracking, ensuring that supply chains run smoothly even in challenging environments. Corporates Waste Startups' Time with Co-Development Deals: A Cautionary Tale As startups, we are often lured by the promise of co-development deals with large corporates. These partnerships seem like a golden opportunity to leverage big budgets, vast resources, and extensive networks. However, the reality can be starkly different and quite disheartening. Many startups spend years pouring their heart and soul into product development, aligning their goals with those of a corporate partner, only to see all their efforts unravel due to sudden reorganizations or budget cuts on the corporate side. These changes are often out of our control and can lead to abrupt project terminations, leaving startups high and dry with wasted time and resources.  Things That Can Go Wrong 1. Reorganizations: Corporates frequently undergo structural changes. A project that was a priority today can become irrelevant tomorrow due to a change in leadership or strategy. Your dedicated efforts may no longer align with the new direction, leading to project abandonment. 2. Budget Cuts: Economic downturns or shifts in financial strategy can result in budget cuts. Projects deemed non-essential are the first to go. Despite having a potentially game-changing product, you might find your funding suddenly pulled, stalling your development indefinitely.  Ways to Safeguard Your Startup 3. Legal Protection: Ensure you are legally protected from day one. Detailed contracts with clear terms on deliverables, milestones, payment schedules, and termination clauses can safeguard your interests. Don't rely solely on verbal agreements or vague promises. 4. Milestone-Based Payments: Structure your contracts to include milestone-based payments. This ensures you receive compensation for the work completed at each stage, reducing the financial impact if the project is terminated prematurely. 5. IP Rights: Maintain control over your intellectual property (IP). Clearly outline IP rights in your agreements to prevent your innovations from being absorbed without proper credit or compensation. 6. Diversification: Avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. Relying heavily on a single corporate partner can be risky. Diversify your partnerships and revenue streams to mitigate the impact of any single partnership falling through. 7. Legal Counsel: Engage experienced legal counsel to review all agreements. A lawyer specializing in startup and corporate partnerships can help you navigate the complexities and ensure your rights are protected.
