Meter Sticks-Some Great Ways to Use Them in Science Class On social media I suggest buying a class set of meter sticks. These are such great tools. They can probably be used in every unit in middle school science class. Here are some of my favorite uses. 1. Some teachers may feel this is too personal for students. At the beginning of the year, students can measure their height in centimeters. They can use this data to graph the class heights, and at the end of the year, they can measure again and make a graph of the beginning and completion of the school year. There may be students that don’t change much, and there may be students who grow a lot. 2. Ecological study using a quadrat to measure study area. Many classrooms do not have equipment for science. An ecological quadrat can be “made” with two meter sticks at right angles to each other. Students carefully toss one meter stick, and then use the second one to form a right angle from the first. The other two side can be imagined. Inside the quadrant, students record living and non-living things they see. Quadrat photo would not load! 3. Ball drop experiment is great fun. Different balls dropped from the same height or the same ball dropped from different heights to see how high they bounce, are great experiments for even young students to try. Ball drop would not load 4. This experiment for studying Newton’s Second Law uses two meter sticks as a trough. It makes control of the motion easy and data collection a snap. Check out the experiments here. https://lnkd.in/g8zKRxp9 5. The Best Flying________ Many of us have used paper airplane design, or shooting rubber bands at angles as simple yet effective data collection activities. Obviously taping a series of meter sticks down provides a stable measuring device to use in these activities to make the data collection speedy and smooth. 6. Demonstrations in science class are wonderful for so many reasons. Not too much prep or equipment is required, they are in the teacher’s control, they can get students thinking, and they can be used at many different times during the learning cycle. I am sure you can think of more reasons too. Here is a great one using a meter stick. https://lnkd.in/g8nENpNT 7. Two other examples from my Teachers Pay Teachers Store. The Bubble Experiment https://lnkd.in/g5yBeYFK and Measure How You React https://lnkd.in/gjKNuwTa also use meter sticks. There are many more ways to use meter sticks in science classrooms. Meter sticks are a great investment!

I LOVE Science Ok, geek here. I love science. Reading about it, designing and running experiments, and of course, teaching it. I share my passion in the things I design (and sometimes sell) on Teachers Pay Teachers. I designed this reading about Density in Nature, and I really love it. The descriptions of the organisms’ use of density come from the book King Solomon’s Ring by Konrad Lorenz. This reading could be done as a read-aloud, as a review of density, or as an introduction to the concept of density. Please take a look! https://lnkd.in/gedcJN2E
