STEM Greenhouse

Last week, our Sankofa STEM Greenhouse students embarked on an exciting research cruise with Grand Valley State University's Annis Water Resources Institute. They collected local water samples, tested and analyzed data in the onboard lab, and uncovered secrets of local ecosystems through PONAR dredging. After their scientific adventure, they headed to PJ Hoffmaster State Park for even more fun. There, they played team-building and survival games, learned from speakers from Carlos Calderon with West Michigan Environmental Action Council and Brandon Fisher with the USDA, pitched tents, enjoyed a delicious dinner of burgers, hot dogs, and s'mores, and wrapped up the day with a game of touch football. Last Wednesday, we kicked off our staff orientation for Sankofa STEM Academy at LINCup Grand Rapids with a feast of amazing Jamaican cuisine from The Jamaican Way (details at the end of the video). Our staff enjoyed every bite of fried plantains, jerk and curry chicken, beef patties, and flavorful rice. At STEM Greenhouse, we prioritize supporting small, Black-owned businesses to meet our organization's needs, and we challenge you to do the same. Consider this: You're planning your 57th corporate meeting of the month and need to order breakfast for 50. Where are you going to order from? AmeriCorps members play a vital role by adding more capacity to our programs to accomplish all the goals we’ve set as an organization.
