Today is the International Day of Charity 🤲🏾, a celebration and call to action for global 🌎 solidarity to eradicate poverty by the United Nations. The UN calls poverty in all its forms and dimensions the "greatest global challenge." In the United States, there is a direct correlation 📊 between poverty and educational attainment (1). And, there is data correlating access to high-quality education and race (2). Lastly, new data shows the incredible gaps in reading and mathematics scores by race (3). Visit STEM Greenhouse to check out how we aim to change the narrative... Thank you Lake Michigan Credit Union for supporting work that is uplifting our community's students!
Connections create opportunity! LMCU employees joined other BIPOC mentors in STEM, business, and beyond to connect with Sankofa STEM Summer Academy (SSSA) students for a day of networking and inspiration. We were proud to partner with STEM Greenhouse’s SSSA program and can’t wait to see what these young people do next!

As we approach the new academic year, it's crucial to address the challenges students face in securing scholarships. Did you know that only 1 in 8 high school students receives a scholarship? Even among those awarded, 97% receive $2,500 or less (Kantrowitz, 2020), highlighting a significant financial gap in education funding. At STEM Greenhouse, we're dedicated to providing opportunities for students of color to succeed, including sharing valuable scholarship information with high school juniors and seniors. Do you know a parent of a high school junior or senior who could benefit from these insights? If so, please share this information. Together, we can make a difference in their educational journey and future.

Dr. Keli Christopher, #CEO and Founder of STEM Greenhouse in Grand Rapids, MI, is reaching vulnerable students in underperforming schools with #STEM education and exposure to STEM careers. Dr. Christopher is the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in #AgriculturalEngineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the third Black woman globally to hold such a degree. The #WoodsonCenter $5,000 mini-grant was incredibly helpful in expanding our math program [Kids Count] STEM Greenhouse. Alongside this financial support, the capacity-building training they provided will enable us to apply for additional funding, helping us to reach and prepare many more children for bright futures in STEM career fields.” – Dr. Christopher She left her engineering job in 2014 to start STEM Greenhouse to address the immediate need she saw in her community: “I established STEM Greenhouse to uplift schools with low proficiency levels in math and science, where teacher shortages [in math and science] and low parental involvement are common.”

The University of Michigan Health-West Makabila employee resource group and Office for Health Equity and Inclusion, in partnership with University of Michigan Health-Sparrow and STEM Greenhouse, recently hosted Sankofa STEM middle school students for an immersive day in healthcare career exploration. The event featured hands-on activities like CPR and IV demonstrations, heart monitoring, vein finding, hand hygiene, fitness and healthy lifestyle challenges. Students also explored various career pathways in medicine, including physician, advance practice providers, nursing, operations and business roles. Our volunteers and speakers introduced the students to inspiring Black clinicians and healthcare professionals, providing valuable insights and inspiration. Thank you to everyone who made this day possible. #HailToTheCaregivers

Did you know July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month? This is a time to address the unique mental health challenges faced by BIPOC communities due to systemic inequalities and cultural stigmas that create barriers to access. At STEM Greenhouse, we recognize the importance of mental health and the necessity of rest. Our team will be out of the office until August 4th to recharge and rejuvenate. We understand that the work continues even while we take this break, and assure you that all prior commitments will be honored. We appreciate your patience with any communication delays during this period. Prioritizing mental health is vital for everyone, and not just in lipservice. Please take the time necessary to care for yourself as you care for others. And, let's continue to advocate for a more inclusive and supportive world.
