What is it you do? This is a question often asked by people when I tell them I am now working as a Patient Advocate. I thought I would begin posting weekly blogs about "everything advocacy". In this blog I cover information about the services I provide. Every advocate has their own "niche" of services. We are all different and come from different backgrounds and it is important for health care consumers to understand this so they can select the best advocate for their specific needs. https://lnkd.in/ePdJtC-9

Having to advocate for my Mom has been extremely difficult even though I am a nurse of 44 years, case manager for 20 years and now a Patient Advocate for 1.5 years. Requesting medical records has always been very time consuming as a case manager, so I was knowledgeable of all the hoops to jump through, and who to go to, to get what I needed. I was hopeful the Cures Act would solve that…. It is a start but it remains very cumbersome because each facility has their own portals….. But guess what…… Primary Records is working very hard to resolve this…. I am so looking forward to their launch on behalf of my Mom and all of those patients and their families out there, struggling to navigate their health care options. Having direct access to our own records is crucial. Empowering our Clients and teaching them to be their own best advocates is what we do. Having Primary Records available to our Clients will be a great teaching tool for us, as we can have all the information to develop a comprehensive plan of care, leading to better outcomes. Maureen didn’t have her rollator again, but she still wanted to get out to do some shopping with her great granddaughter, so here we are again-adapting! Maureen doesn’t sit around wishing she could do things the way she use to. She learns how to adapt to her challenges. She rises up to the occasion to figure out how she can ADAPT to live her most fulfilling life. Collaboration continues to be the focus for me in 2024. This week we had the opportunity to meet up with Jean Ross RN and her husband Chris at Primary Record to learn more about their innovative use of technology. This technology will be making a huge difference in healthcare navigation and coordination for everyone in the future. Think about this….. 💡What if there was a way to connect all those portals in one place? 💡What if there was a place where all that information was then organized and categorized and accessible? 💡What if families had a place together where each person’s medical information could be stored, accessed and updated continuously? For those of you who are nurses, case managers and Patient Advocates, we see this as a game changer!!! No more confusion when multiple medications and treatments prescribed by multiple physicians, who do not communicate with one another. No more countless hours gathering medical records to review and organize and copy along with summaries and timelines to provide to multiple physicians caring for one patient. This leads to improvement in safety, quality of care and outcomes! We all are patients! We all deserve quality care! According to a new AARP Report, it finds family caregivers provide $600 billion in unpaid care across the US. "Care provided by millions of unpaid family caregivers across the US was valued at $600 billion in 2021, the new report estimates, a $130 billion increase in unpaid contributions from 2019. The staggering figure is based on about 38 million caregivers providing an average of 18 hours of care, at an average value of $16.59 per hour (AARP.org). ✨ Family caregivers are the backbone of the long-term care system. ✨ Roughly 60 percent of family caregivers work either full-time or part-time jobs and 30 percent live with a child or a grandchild. They need and deserve more assistance. 💡 Patient Advocates are now becoming more in demand due to these rising numbers. 💡 Caregivers need support.
