Great use of Stereolabs ZED 2 to detect the presence of people and obstacles for a safe robotics arm control side-by-side with human operators. Congratulations Kelly Merckaert!
🎉 Thrilled to share that the latest findings from my Ph.D. research that was co-authored with Bryan Convens, Marco Nicotra, and Bram Vanderborght, have been published in Elsevier Robotics and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing. I'm also excited to announce that our accompanying video is featured on IEEE Video Friday! 📹✨ Check out the blog post here: https://lnkd.in/gfhj4s6N 🔍 Our article, titled "Real-time constraint-based planning and control of robotic manipulators for safe human-robot collaboration," shows how we can safely navigate a 7DOF robot arm while simultaneously achieving efficient task realization in different obstacle environments. 💡A recent trend in industrial robotics is to have robotic manipulators working side-by-side with human operators. A challenging aspect of this coexistence is that the robot is required to reliably solve complex motion planning problems in a dynamically changing environment. Our solution introduces a computationally efficient planning and control architecture that combines a Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) path planner with a trajectory-based Explicit Reference Governor (ERG) by means of a reference selector. The resulting scheme can steer the full nonlinear robot arm kinodynamics to the desired end-effector pose in the presence of actuator saturation, limited joint ranges, speed limits, a cluttered static obstacle environment, and moving human collaborators. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is experimentally validated on the Franka Robotics Panda robot arm and fed with environment feedback information from a Stereolabs ZED2 depth camera. Our method outperforms both the standalone RRT and ERG algorithms in cluttered static environments where it overcomes: i) the RRT’s inability to handle dynamic constraints which result in constraint violations and ii) the ERG’s undesirable property of getting trapped in local minima. 📹 For a deeper dive into the core concepts of our developed control methodology, interested viewers can watch the comprehensive 21-minute video here: https://lnkd.in/gVewx93b 📝 For those interested in further details, the full paper is available here: https://lnkd.in/gGH99y67 🤖 The code will be open-sourced in the future. 🌟 Search-and-Rescue Robot Dog: Autonomous Exploration and Visual SLAM with Unitree Go1 🌟 I'm thrilled to share a major development in my journey through the MS in Robotics program, here at Northwestern University. 🤖 🏆 Goal: As my personal Winter Project, over the past 10 weeks I developed #ros2 packages for a #UnitreeGo1 🐕🦺 to autonomously explore an outdoor environment, to search and locate a missing person ⛑ . 💪 Motivation: To allow robots to look for people missing in a natural environment, where gathering a search party ad-hoc is difficult. This leverages the unique advantages that legged robots 🦿 as well as visual SLAM 👁️ possess, in unmapped environments. 🛠 Setup: The dog (a Unitree Robotics Go1) is equipped with a Zed 2i camera by Stereolabs and uses its built-in Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) and mapping for SLAM 🗺️, object detection for detecting human beings🧍, a frontier exploration algorithm for searching and environment 🔍, and the Nav Stack by Open Navigation LLC for traveling to goal poses 🧭. Much of the work in this project has been about integrating different systems using ROS2 Humble on an NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano. 🌟 Final Product: At this stage, the frontier exploration algorithm is more explorative than exploitative and therefore only suitable for dense environments and not sparse outdoor environments. This video shows a teleoperated concept of the final prototype, and more information about this is given on: https://lnkd.in/g6bdH4_F 🤩 To see more cool projects like this, please check out my portfolio: https://lnkd.in/g9C5ux9c. I've documented 17 of my best projects here :) Stay tuned for more updates as I continue to delve into the fascinating world of robotics and automation! New project alert! We consider ourselves fortunate to engage with projects that not only utilize cutting-edge technology but also foster emotionally resonant experiences. This project embodies both. Last month, in collaboration with Ocean Outdoor Nederland, we brought to life an award-winning concept from the agency NOSUCH. We handled the technical execution of an experience for Digital Out of Home screens, aimed at raising awareness and donations for Familiehuis Daniel den Hoed - a foundation providing a temporary 'second home' for family members of cancer patients. Watch the video to witness how seamlessly technology and experience intertwine, creating a truly impactful connection.
