FOLIA (Fear of Losing it All) and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) are both emotional responses that investors may experience during both gains and losses. However, studies show that FOLIA trumps FOMO, as losses hurt about twice as much as gains make you feel good. This phenomenon highlights the significant psychological impact of potential losses on investors’ decisions. The chart illustrates that overcoming losses takes more than the loss itself, especially if income is being taken from the portfolio. There are many solutions to help protect from FOLIA. Reach out to your Stifel financial advisor for information.

Meet Larry Zartarian, a Portfolio Manager with Stifel affiliate 1919 Investment Counsel in San Francisco, California. Outside of 1919 Investment Counsel, Larry sits on the board of the nonprofit Pacific Pinball Museum as president and chairman, continuing to build on a love story with pinball that started as a young boy. As a boy, Larry would travel with his mother, grandmother, and brother from Fresno to Santa Cruz for a weeklong vacation each summer. While there, he and his brother would frequent the boardwalk arcades and spend hours playing various games, including pinball. Larry became so skilled at pinball that he learned how to turn the $.50 he was given every day by his grandmother into a profit! Larry continued honing his pinball skills, and in the early ’90s began collecting and refurbishing machines. He started slowly, filling his basement with 7 to 10 machines at any given time, and by the late ’90s, he was renting a storage unit to house nearly 125 machines! His collection has since grown to over 450 games, which he has donated to the museum, and consists mostly of machines from 1947 to 1972 – what Larry refers to as the “Golden Age of Pinball.” Around the time he started collecting, Larry met Michael Schiess, the owner and founder of the Lucky Juju Arcade – what would later become the Pacific Pinball Museum. The mission of the Pacific Pinball Museum (PPM) is “To inspire an interest in science, art, and history through pinball, and to preserve and promote this important part of American culture.” With around 100 machines set up for free play at any time, visitors can pay a daily fee, or have a yearly membership. The mission of the PPM resonates deeply with Larry. “We’re trying to preserve and promote pinball, because it is a very unique American phenomenon. It was not anywhere near as pervasive around the world as it was here.” In fact, pinball has a storied American history. It was illegal in many states from the early 1940s to 1976 because of its perceived ties to gambling. It was seen as a game of chance as opposed to a game of skill.  In 1976, pinball historian Roger Sharpe played in front of a New York City council to demonstrate that pinball was indeed a game of skill. After thoroughly proving the skills required to “win big,” the ban was lifted and August 1 (Roger’s birthday) has recently become designated as “National Pinball Day.” Looking to the future of the PPM, the dream is to have a permanent home where all 1,300 games in the museum’s possession can be displayed and enjoyed. “We have all these machines, and the majority of them are just sitting in the dark, not even set up and played. These games are meant to be played, and it breaks my heart when I walk into our warehouse and I just see these games sitting here doing nothing.” With a larger, permanent home, they plan to expand on the science, art, and history of pinball, and make it a true “Smithsonian Museum for Pinball.” #PeopleofStifel

Meet Jonathan Brandt, a Portfolio Solutions Senior Specialist at our Home Office in St. Louis. When Jon’s father, Randy Brandt, passed away in 2021 from Lymphoma, Jon knew he wanted to do something special to honor him and help other families in similar situations – and thus “Battling Together” was born. Randy was a truck driver for 35 years with a passion for golf. He was diagnosed with Lymphoma while he was still driving, and when his company closed down, he decided it was as good a time as any to retire. With more time on his hands, Randy favored spending it with family – often watching Jon’s daughter while he and his wife were at work. After Randy passed, the family knew they wanted to start up a golf tournament to raise money for Lymphoma and Leukemia research in his honor. As the donations from friends, family, and sponsors grew, they quickly realized it would be in their best interest to create a legitimate charity to house the proceeds. While sitting around discussing names, “Battling Together” was thrown out. Jon elaborated on the significance of this name by saying, “My family agreed on Battling Together as the name because no one should have to face this battle alone.” In addition to the golf tournament, Battling Together also hosts an annual 5k in Webster Groves, Missouri, around Cinco de Mayo – the Fiesta de Mayo 5k. Jon and his family had participated in this race several years prior to officially managing it in 2022. He noted, “It’s a lot more work than you think – setting everything up and getting sponsors – but it’s been a staple of Webster Groves for over 20 years and is just a great event.” Through his involvement in the space, Jon was actually nominated for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2024 Visionaries of the Year campaign. Visionary candidates have 10 weeks to fundraise for LLS in honor of blood cancer survivors and other honored heroes. This year, the St. Louis candidates collectively raised over $524,000! As Jon and the Battling Together team gear up for the golf tournament this fall, they have no plans of stopping any time soon. “Our mission is to envision a world without Leukemia or Lymphoma. We’ll keep fundraising for research as long as we can.” #PeopleofStifel
