🦪 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! 🦪 We are hosting a Vertical Oyster Garden workshop with the Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University and CCA Florida at JU on Saturday, September 28 from 9 a.m. - Noon. https://lnkd.in/ezU42ybp Vertical Oyster Gardens consist of recycled oyster shells that are strung together to create habitat for new oysters along with many other species of marine invertebrates. A single adult oyster has the ability to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and each VOG can accumulate dozens of new oysters in just a few months. The goal is to distribute hundreds of VOGs throughout the Jacksonville area to improve water quality and create new oyster habitats. Make a real impact for your river and sign up to join us! https://lnkd.in/ezU42ybp

Friday we went out to Ribault Scenic Drive Park with Dun & Bradstreet. We pulled lots of weeds, collected litter, and had a great time serving our community together! THANK YOU to all of our volunteers!

According to marine biologist Dr. Quint White, oysters are "best to eat in the 'R' months" - all the more reason to plan to join us NovembeR 22 for our 23rd annual Oyster Roast! https://lnkd.in/exYUjXqv
Huh, oysters change from male to female? And why are they best to eat in the 'R' months?

Check out this before and after comparison… 😅 After its installation in 2012, this sign in #SanMarcoJax was ready for an update, which we got to see this weekend! St. Johns Riverkeeper and our numerous partners collaborated to install the City of Jacksonville, Florida - Government’s first bioswale along Lasalle Street in front of the San Marco Library more than 10 years ago. A bioswale collects stormwater runoff from roads, rooftops, and parking lots and uses soil and plants to remove pollution before the water reaches the #StJohnsRiver. 💧 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dYDrHgWa

If you thought you saw a church floating along the river between the Mathews and Hart bridges during your lunch hour on Thursday, your eyes weren't deceiving you. 👀 It's heading to Palatka, and has journeyed all the way from Palmetto on Florida’s west coast! https://lnkd.in/ebBa6kt3

This week we hosted our first Ribault River boat cruise that was open to the public - the trip sold out quickly so we hope to plan some more of these in the future to help more people experience this St. Johns tributary and learn more about the Resilient Ribault project. Since last year, we've hosted 18 trips total for about 300 passengers! Attendees loved hearing about the value of natural shorelines (which are common in the Ribault River Corridor), and admired the improvements to Ribault Scenic Drive Park that we helped advocate for. We also saw lots of birds: anhinga, kingfisher, herons, and egrets.
