About us

Stony Brook Medicine expresses our shared mission of research, clinical care and education – a mission embraced by our faculty, staff, researchers, and students. It is the embodiment of everything we do on behalf of the health of patients – not only here in our community, but also in the region and worldwide. Stony Brook Medicine comprises five Health Sciences schools — Renaissance School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, School of Health Technology and Management, School of Nursing and School of Social Welfare — as well as Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and more than 200 community-based healthcare settings throughout Suffolk County. Our health sciences schools work in tandem with our research and clinical care teams to deliver the best ideas in medicine to patients. As an academic medical center, we are all about ideas. Creating them. Nurturing them. Protecting them. Challenging them. Improving them. Teaching them to others. And most importantly of all, delivering them to patients and their families – sooner, smarter and better. An “idea” can be a new treatment protocol, best practices, a bright new researcher we’ve brought in from another institution, the convenience of an outpatient clinic, or simply a more user-friendly way to access our medical care. Ideas drive us, they thrive here, and we are committed to bringing more of them to our patients than anyone else.

📢 New Drug to Control Pain Related to Cancer Treatment Originally Developed at #StonyBrook Gets FDA Clearance: https://bit.ly/3SkLvHU Six years ago, Stony Brook University, through the #Research Foundation for the The State University of New York, licensed a promising technology to Artelo Biosciences that identified Fatty Acid Binding Proteins (FABPs) as drug targets of the body’s endocannabinoid system for a potentially promising way to treat pain, inflammation and #cancer. Now, the first one of these compounds has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (#FDA) for human #ClinicalTrials. #WeAreStonyBrookMedicine

“I wanted to have a career in a health profession and make a difference in people’s lives,” says Mary Slovak, Physical Therapist at the Gladys Brooks Center in Southold, an offsite location of Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital. “Getting someone back to the way they were living before a sickness or injury was important to me. I’ve worked in many different settings with interesting people and patients, and it’s been a great career for me. There’s never a dull moment!” As a young girl, Mary was inspired after her grandfather’s stroke. “I witnessed the home therapy and thought it was interesting. I felt that it was rewarding to help people.” She also had a physical education teacher who inspired her to consider a career as a physical therapist. “He left teaching to go into physical therapy and work with athletes. I felt physical therapy had lots of areas to explore and many possibilities.” Mary graduated with a degree in Physical Therapy in 1989. Since then, she’s worked at all the Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital physical therapy locations taking on many different assignments. Recently, she’s been focusing on geriatric orthopaedics on the #NorthFork. “I am certified in the Otago Exercise Program for balance and reducing falls,” Mary explains. “Otago is 17 specific strength and balance exercises that patients do three times a week for eight weeks. The Otago program, currently instructed in the office in Southold, is designed for older patients who have fallen or have a fear of falling. The exercises consist of simple range of motion, balance, and strength training with light weights. The program is very individualized, scalable, and is designed for patients to take ownership of their care. Studies have shown that patients who have followed the Otago program have a 35-40 percent reduction of falls. It’s one of many tools to help improve someone’s life." Mary’s positive personality and genuine passion for her patients is evident. “I love the people and the patients here. Here, I’m part of something great.” #WeAreStonyBrookMedicine #HealthcareHeroes #Greenport #PhysicalTherapy

Congratulations to our June #DaisyAward recipient, Marisa Pantol, LPN! Marisa is the first LPN to receive this award at #StonyBrook Medicine! Marisa was nominated by one of her patients. "Marisa has been nothing short of amazing the entire time. When I first came in, I was having trouble with losing my IVs nearly every day. The constant need for a new IV was giving me a significant amount of anxiety and Marisa would come in here and just talk to me about anything and try to make me laugh so it would stress me out less. [...] I look forward to seeing her and genuinely feel less anxious when she is here because I know that if I have a problem that she will most likely solve it. As someone who works in #healthcare myself, I look up to her and am going to strive to be like her when I return to work." Marisa is an incredible example of the impact that moments of compassion, empathy and connection can have on patients and their families. Thank you, Marisa, for all that you do! #WeAreStonyBrookMedicine #Nursing
