Stop AAPI Hate

Non-profit Organizations

Stop AAPI Hate is a national coalition aimed at addressing anti-Asian racism across the U.S.

About us

In response to the alarming escalation in xenophobia and bigotry resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the AAPI Equity Alliance, Chinese for Affirmative Action, and the Asian American Studies Department of San Francisco State University launched the Stop AAPI Hate coalition on March 19, 2020. The coalition tracks and responds to incidents of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, shunning, and child bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Our approach recognizes that in order to effectively address anti-Asian racism we must work to end all forms of structural racism leveled at Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color.

“People are going to question our children...Are you really Mexican? Or are you really Chinese? That meant we needed to train them in a way that, without a doubt, they feel that they are both, and this is their identity.” – Lisa Yep Salinas In times when racial segregation was embedded in the law in the United States, and blocked communities of color from gaining citizenship, voting, and accessing other basic civil rights, many AAPI and Latino communities banded together. From Asian immigration to Latin America in the 1500s to marriages between descendants of Puerto Rican laborers and Native Hawaiians in the 1800s, AAPI Latino communities have a rich, intertwined history of labor, colonization, and anti-immigrant sentiment. Today, the AAPI Latino population continues to grow – more than doubling in size between 2000 and 2020,  according to recent Census Data. As #HispanicHeritageMonth comes to an end, read more from The @Sacramento Bee about how AAPI Latinos are finding belonging through celebrating both sides of their identities: https://lnkd.in/gcnnX9Vj

Anti-AA/PI hate is pervasive, according to our latest research. It’s also a common driver of political engagement. AA/PI adults who experienced hate in 2023 were 2.5x as likely to engage in political activities last year. And recent polling from AAPI Data / Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote) found that 77% of Asian Americans and 61% of Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders are “absolutely certain” they will vote this fall. One thing is clear: AA/PI voters are primed to make a huge difference in the upcoming elections. You can too. Stop AAPI Hate co-founders Manjusha P. Kulkarni and Cynthia Choi alongside Representative Judy Chu of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) recently spoke to USA TODAY about the ongoing prevalence of hate against AA/PI communities documented in our new annual survey report, “From Pain to Power”. Stop AAPI Hate’s research shows that anti-AA/PI hate comes in many forms, and goes beyond stories of physical attacks that we see in the news. 51% of AA/PIs who participated in our national survey with NORC at the University of Chicago said they experienced institutional discrimination in 2023 – including hate in a business, work, housing, health care, educational, or government setting. 💭 To learn more about how, when, and where AA/PIs experience hate, read the front page story now: https://lnkd.in/gTZxv-Sv

Asian immigrants contribute to the richness of many communities nationwide. But under #Project2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would have unprecedented and unchecked powers to target, detain, and deport them — tearing apart immigrant families and blocking funding to immigrant-rich communities nationwide. Head to our website now to read our full Project 2025 analysis. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gkR4q3Wf
