The warning signs are there. There’s been a lot of talk of recession lately and it looks like we may be headed in that direction. While the storage industry tends to fare well during these cycles, there are things you can do to recession proof your business now. Revisit your budget and look for opportunities to streamline. Operators should look at their monthly recurring charges to assess which elements of the business cost the most, where they can reduce costs, and which charges are necessary to run the business. Perhaps there are subscriptions that can be cancelled or energy-efficient alternatives available that could reduce utility costs. For owners of a self-storage business, it does feel that rates for Property and General Liability policies are headed in the wrong direction. As an industry, all of us need to play a role in reducing claims to help keep policy rates low. For our part, we conduct multiple inspections and perform regular maintenance tasks throughout the year to prevent liability claims.
